distributor swap: any tips?
#1
I googled the topic and all I could find were how-to's for Chevy engines. I'm sure it is close enough, but I was hoping for instructions written by/for a old Ford guy.
I wish to pull the stock points distributor out of my 68 289 and replace it with a shock re-built unit that also has the Unilite conversion.
This seems like it should be easy enough. I just want to do it right the first time.
Thanks

just make sure to mark the position of the vac advance and the rotor so you get both of them back in the right place, you'll still have to adjust the timing but it will be pretty close and the car will at least start up so you can set the timing right. one other thing to watch out for is the oil pump drive shaft, they have a tendency to want to pull out of the oil pump when you pull the distributor. if the shaft was installed properly the last time the pump was replaced it shouldn't be a problem though, if it does try to come out but you may have to re-align it to get the distributor to slide back into place. if the pump was ever replaced and the shaft wasn't put back in correctly and does come all the way out you will likely have to remove the oil pan to fish it out, but if you are really careful removing the distributor you may be able to "catch" the shaft before it falls out of the distributor. i've been there and it isn't fun when a job that should have taken about 30 minutes turns into a whole weekend project
