To throw some more fuel on this fire. I believe the basic premise of the Restomod theme as it originally was formulated are changes that can be "undone" without cutting, welding, or painting. Beyond that you've exceeded the original concept of restomodding ... which is fine by me because I never allowed myself to fall into that category.

So, a book of "Restomod Mustangs" would be relatively boring ... the real interest would be in the more radical Pro-Touring and G-Machines that ALSO exist in the Mustang realm.

 

That's an interesting point Jay. I think the general feeling has drifted away from this premise, but I agree that was a big factor when the term first surfaced. (early 90's by my estimation)

 

So what you are saying (Jay, GT350Clone) is that based on the original definition of Restomod from a dozen years ago, my 66 is a restomod simply because I have radial tires and a rebuilt engine with 302 heads and an aftermarket cam. ..

I agree with Blake - when I hear Restomod I think of lowered stance, molded fender flares, shaved handles, modern suspension/engine/seats/electronics.

If the term Restomod really means the former, then what do we call the latter?

 

I would think that the term Restomod would/should only be applied once the car reaches a certain level of completeness with that philosophy in mind. For instance, my car is modified differently than stock with some (very few) performance mods, lowered w/ polyurethane everywhere, disc brakes, modern seats, etc... but until I can finish the job with 17" wheels, 5 speed stick, and maybe a fuel injected 5.0, I won't call it a restomod. Maybe an in-progress restomod, or just modified.

By the time you get it I will have my sequential shifter setup finished and perfected. Just think how cool it would be to be shiftin your Mustang like a rally car

 

Nope, because I would consider those replacement parts. I would not consider using synthetic oil a "restomod" upgrade either B) Restomod upgrades are not necessarily hidden ... they are just how do we say it... easier to install and remove (if that decision is made at a later date).

To me its more than slapping some after market dress-up kit on, different wheels, and a stereo. It has to have some craft to it. If you MADE those wheels and tires, or the stereo is well wired and artfully presented, THEN you have something... otherwise you just have some shiny parts on a stock Mustang.
