Convince me: I'm might be getting a '66 Coupe
I might be buying a 1966 Mustang Coupe off of eBay. It's a 6 cylinder, but I have plans to change that if I get it. This car is pretty sharp and doesn't appear to need much work. But what I'm looking for is pics of '64-'66 coupes or fastbacks, both inside and out. I have some ideas of things I'd like to do, but I'd also like to see what kinds of things you all have done wth yours. I'm interested in both bone stock and modified interiors and exteriors. I don't plan making my car real crazy. Probably just a few changes from stock. But I want to get some ideas of what things to consider.
I look forward to seeing your cars and also any advice you could give me.
Thanks in advance!

Congrats John! Not sure how long you've been surfing the boards. If it hasn't been long, then welcome. I've got a 66 coupe. I just posted some pics of her all torn down in a paint topic I created. Scroll down a bit and you'll find it.
Mine's a 66 coupe. It started out as an I6, and I did the whole conversion. Not sure if you've ever tackled that before, but be prepared if you haven't. It's quite an undertaking. I'll be more than happy to help you with advice and so forth for that one. I can tell you everything you'll need to do the conversion.
I'll try and get some pics of my car in its original form up on here soon. I started off wanting to go extreme mod, but I changed up. I'm going to go sleeper with mine. I've found that doing so says more about you and your car then being in your face mod.
I'm pulling my rear quarter emblems and smoothing it like the GT models. I'm pulling the molding under the door and smoothing that. I'm not going to go with a hood scoop. I want it to look clean and unpresumptuous. Reason being - I want people to have no idea what I'm packing under the hood.
Unfortunately for my wallet, I have a love affair with chrome (and I'm not even married yet!). I love all of the chrome on the car. It just has to be there to compliment things. I also love the Pony interior. It was the only 3 years they did it, and it was the coolest interior. I'm DEFINATLEY going pony on mine. I already have most of it done. Just a few additions.
I'll stop short here because I could talk all day about it. If you have any questions, fire away, and I'll feed you all the info I have. I do all of my work myself, so I have a TON of wrench time on my car. I can help you out of most any jam.
Good luck with the resto. I'll post pics later this evening when I get home from doing my body work.

This is my 1966 coupe it was once a six cylinder too! i have done severl mods to this car after restoring it... I put a 302 crate, a c-4 tranny w/ B&M shift ratchet mega shifter... shelby hood, billet grille, chrome all over the engine, ect! if you have any questions or want to know anything else i have done to the car let me know. i am just in a little bit in a rush right now but i will post more pics if you want them.
Cool I'm glad to hear you are thinking of getting a 66 coupe. My car was a Straight six also. Luckily when I bought it someone had already switched to 5-lug bolt pattern and it had a 8 inch rear end installed in the car. They also had a 289 in it. When I bought the car I thought it was a original V8 Stang but after running the numbers I found out that it was originally a Sprint 200. I put a 302 engine in it (Blew the 289) rear end, suspension, radiator, drive shaft, rebuilt the tranny, new gas tank, and paint. Well everything minus the interior which I'm saving for now. The car was in nice shape when I bought it but I have had to systematically replace everything in the course of the restoration.
I have been helping Stanger X with his conversion for about 2 years and I would strongly recommend starting with a V8 car. We had alot of problems with our cars because it was originally a six. Such as suspension parts not working right and the bell housing on the tranny. There is many other issue we ran in to that I can't think of right now but they were all bad. You can do it,
it just cost more money and time to convert a six to 8 then just starting with a 8 and replacing everything.
It's been along road but our cars are starting to take form.
I wish you well in your purchase and resturation.

Wow, I didn't expect to hear that it was so difficult to make the swap to a V8. Now I'm a little worried, but it might not be an issue now since all of a sudden the person I hoped to buy the car from isn't answering my emails or anything. :bang: I didn't offically win the auction. It didn't meet the reserve and I thought we had agreed on an offer for me to buy it outright outside of eBay. Maybe now seeing what you all have said, it might not be a bad thing. I still plan on getting a '64-'68 Mustang, but now I'll definately make extra effort to get one with a V8.
Shibbiestang: Great looking car and I'd love to see more pics of it if you have them.
StangerX: Thanks for the welcome. I've been a member here for around a year now, but I just don't post too much. The posts I have made before this thread were all in the 2005 forum. I also contributed some pics of the 2005 GT in the Cleveland Auto Show collection on this site a few months ago. I just recently (few days ago) started looking into getting a classic Mustang and started browsing the classic forum. I hadn't planned on getting a Mustang due to these rediculous gas prices, but something just clicked and said screw it. I used to have a 2000 GT which I then traded in for a 2001 Cobra. Then, I had to get rid of the Cobra because we got a house.
Oh well. Anyways, I'd still love to see any pics of your guy's cars. And now, since the '66 isn't a sure thing anymore, I wouldn't mind seeing pics of '67-'68 too.
Thanks again everyone.
