vacuum related?

the main jet wouldn't affect idle but you might have to change them depending on the color of the plugs.

Well you know, you've got do the whole tune to know for sure. Check/change points, gap 'em correctly, maybe new dist cap and rotor. Time it, get it idling as smooth as possible, and at low rpm tweak the air screw for the highest idle.

Don't know if I was told or read in one of my manuals back in the day, but the best way to check if you have the correct main jet, is after the engine is warm go for a drive up a long slight grade under throttle. Pull over and turn the engine off as quick as you can so you don't load the plugs idling.
Pull 2 or 3 plugs. If you have the correct main jet you should have that nice tan color. If they're black your main jet is too large.
I'm at altitude so I've always had to mess with the jets.
Course its best to do as few steps at a time before checking how it runs - so you can isolate any issues as you go.
Had many straight 6's with carbs over the years. Still have on in my '83 F150.
