I have seen or read about this before, but I cannot remember.
I have a 66 coupe with an 8" rearend. I have a 59 ford 9" housing.
Can I use the 8" rearend axles in my 9" housing? Both will be 28 spline.
Thanks,

I'm about 75% sure they interchange, as long as they're both small bearing. Sorry I can't give a more complete answer, but I'll offer up a couple of great links that might be of some help...

On this site:
http://www.ultrastang.com/Rearinfo.asp?Page_ID=1
I found everything I needed to know.
Skim down to this section:
1957-1959 FORD BIG-CAR 9-INCH REAR END WIDTHS & PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS
I baught one out of a 57 wagon, and this gave me the info I was looking for. Can't remember who originally posted it up, but someone on these forums handed me the link, I believe. Just don't want to take credit for someone else's digging. B)

Ultrastang?...Oh yeah, That would be my website!
Yes. the '57-'59 Ford big car rear ends will fit in the '65-'70 Mustangs. (you will gain about 3/8" per side [3/4" overall] more wheel/tire clearance if installed in the '67-'70 bodies).
There are two versions of these rear ends. The first is from the regular '57-'59 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury big cars. These have the medium bearing rear end housings --same as '65-'70 Mustang 8- & 9-inch rear ends.
The second version is the big bearing housing from the '57-'59 Ford Rancheros and station wagons.
Both housings have a 52¼" wide (bare) housing width. The very same as the '65/'66 Mustang 8- & 9-inch rear end housings, and they have the same 43" center-to-center distance on the leaf spring perches just like the '65-'70 Mustangs.
I had a '57 Ford station wagon big bearing 9-inch under my '66 fastback, and fit with no problems.
