68 8" rear end question
68 8" rear end question
Hey all,
I've got a 68 fastback, 3spd 289, (father and I restored a few years back, and handed it down to me a couple years ago), and I'm still learning all the love these babies need to keep going strong... I noticed the 8" rear end has been leaking a little bit.
I don't know much about this stuff I'll admit, but I do know there's no drain plug on the pumpkin, however I can't seem to find where you actually fill it either? lol.... Is there an semi easy way to top it off so that it's not running out of fluid? or is this a job requiring me to drop the whole rear axle?
Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

There is a fill/level hole on the front left of the pumpkin. It takes a 1/2" square drive to get it out. For the love of Mike, be sure you completely clean that out or you will strip it out. (See what this jerk did?)

Once you get it out, you should be able to slip your little finger in there, and the oil should only come say to about 1/4" to the hole. More than this, and it will boil up into your reservoir, if you have an intact one. If you don't have one, or yours is cracked, it'll bleed all over the place, making a mess. To fill it, you need some kind of oil pump. Any kind of pump that will push gear oil will do. I hate the dumb plastic filler containers it sometimes comes in and prefer the old style railroad oiler for this job.
