66 w/Grant steering wheel, problems...

I bought a 66 coupe, w/ a Grant steering wheel. When I 1st bought it, I noticed the steering wheel felt loose and the turn signals, left or right, would not cancel out after completing the turn. I thought, no big deal, I can fix it. After having the car for a month or so, I run down to Dallas Mustang, buy a turn signal cancel cam kit, install it, and it doesn't work. It cancels the signal out, but it drives the turn signal all the way to the other side. (I turn the right signal on, make the right turn, and when the pegs on the back of the wheel hit the cancel cam, it drives it so far it turns on the left turn signal. Does the same thing when making a left turn.) Is there a "special" cancel cam for the Grant steering wheel? Has anyone been down this road and has some tips?

Also, when I tighten down the steering wheel nut enough to "tighten" the wheel, it is so tight the wheel does not turn w/o sincere effort. I have to back it off a bit, and when I get it loose enough so it turns freely, it is loose again. I can rock the steering wheel back and forth about an 1/8 inch. Any comments, suggestions, advice. Thanks in advance!

I have a similar turn signal problem...I didnt realize that it was caused by the wheel though...but yeah....on mine, the signal cancel is just not very reliable, and sometimes I have to manualy have to disengage the turn signal..it doesnt happen all the time, but just sometimes....as for the wheel tighening...mine came loose last summer (after no problems in 3 years) but all I did was tighten it up and I had no problems....I wish the turn signal clicking noise was louder so that I know when it doesnt and I dont accidently not notice, and drive around with it still on....Kinda annoying....

Wheel isn't the problem, it's the bearing inside the housing, behind the turn signal assembly.

The bearing on the steering shaft is pressed in with a phenolic (sp?) spacer, which after 40 years, is probably dried up and gone. And therefore, the shaft isn't centered, but just sitting on the bottom side of the column. Common issue on Tbirds as well. Although, if it were me, I'd be ditchin' the Grant anyway. Never could get the horn button to work right...

Anyway, the fix is to just get some soft weatherstrip. Put some on the bearing to surround it and sorta center it. THEN, get some more weatherstrip in smaller sections, and FORCE IT in the bottom, sides, everywhere around. Use a small screwdriver or other pushing instrument. What you're trying to do is recreate the spacer. The bearing should be easily centered by eye. When you get a lot of that weatherstrip in there, the bearing will be stuck in place, the wheel doesn't move, and your turn signals work again. Don't be shy with the weatherstrip.

You should be able to get it in a roll that has stickyback tape on one side. All foamy like and such, perfect stuff. Any will do.

Hope that helps!
