In the boot (trunk) of my coupe there is a thin black plastic pipe about 1-2mm which comes from the shock through the bottom and around to the filler pipe. At this point there is a valve like a standard tyre valve. The connection doesn't like it can hold much pressure due to the tiny bore. The other end looks like it has been cut (with blunt pliers), so cold be air tight. This looks very after market to me. The connection is not routed anywhere and is just flapping about in the back. Do i need it, is it only part of something that is missing? Does anybody know what this is. I bought the car as a restoration project and i am learning as i go. The tool that had it before me also destroyed the entire wire loom under the dash, so i am in the middle of a complete rewire job via American Autowire which is how i found the connection.

Sounds like a filler valve for air shocks, what type of shocks are on the car. If you plan on going to coilovers or standards shocks you can take it out

I have no idea at all. I asume these are not standard then. This raises a question - were they any good? What is the recommendation? i can assume that i would need another pipe to the other shock too. I didn't bank on changing shocks during the restoration as well! I was under the impression that the underside was done. I will have to check more thoroghly the rest of it. Floor pans had been done well though.

Ummm air shocks are kind of like the cheap version of air ride. The problem is that the upper shock mounts on the shell are not rated to support the weight of the car. So in other words you can read up online of stories where someone had them on their classic and they get shoved through the floor board or undercarriage. I personally have never had the problem but supposedly it's happened to quit a few people, I ran them for a while on a 65. Do you know if the rear springs are original, old, replaced?

For a little more detail of why people use them woul be. Old springs, so the rear end sagged and maybe they wanted a bigger tire or just a different stance. If your not going all out on it, meaning modern, then if the springs are old you would order a set to the height you want and stiffness and then get a proper length shock absorber and you don't need them any longer

Great answers thank you. I think u have talked me into replacing them. I believe the springs are original as it a little tail heavy stance wise. Guess it wouldnt hurt to upgrade them. It want it to look as original as possible with a decent ride if possible. Any recommendations for the replacements?

Ughhhh maybe upgrade to a gt set or a 5 leaf. They have standard mid and reverse eye. Mid lowers an inch I believe and reverse 2. 5 leaf will give you a firmer ride but will allow for a little better handling control
