65 Needs TLC
65 Needs TLC
I'm new to the forum. I just got a 65 289 2 Barrel Auto. It needs lots of work. I have fixed the shifter with new bushings. It ran like crap..Missing when idling. I've rebuilt the carb & it still runs like crap. Now it hesitates when I step on the gas. I'm guessing it needs a bunch of front end work also....The steering wheel is off center and it wanders all over the road. Lots of play in the steering. I need some advice as to where to start. I would really like to get it to run decent before moving on. Any advice will be apprciated...Thanks
I've been through the ol' "bought an oldie that sat in a ditch for years and it runs like poop" quite a few times, even for friends because it is something I loved to (and may again one day) do.
What I would do:
New: plugs, wires, coil, distributor (if a lot of play), cap, rotor, vacuum lines, fuel pump, belts, motor mounts, fuel filter
Check - oil, pull the pan and check - there may be a metal filter that is likely clogged, there may be a magnet in the pan with a lot of shavings on it
If the gas is old, fill the tank with premuim (with B12 if they still sell it) and run it out - try a new tank - there may also be a "sock filter" in the back that is clogged, also check the fuel lines are not cracked, leaking, pulling air
- check the dwell (if necessary), points, timing, fuel/air mixture (an art unto itself)
Hope this helps,
PS - also check all the actuators that the vacuum lines are attached to - you may want to cut all vacuum at the engine to isolate - old cars that sat around will surely have vacuum issues - and this makes a big difference, especially in hesitation.
