351W into '66
#1
I'm thinking about installing a 351w based stroker into my 1966 fastback, mainly because of the additional torque offered by more cubes. I've read what people have said about the swap, and there doesn't seem to be too many drawbacks. I know the engine slots in there nicely, however I wondered with the additional size of the 351 whether I might encounter shock tower clearance issues when the engine leans over under acceleration/torque. Does anybody have any knowledge of whether this is the case ?

i dont know much, but i do know that the shock towers can stay. there wont be any interference from what i know, because the 351W is simply a taller 302 (right? one of you espert dudes can confirm that). there might be deck height issues though, but a couwl hood easily fixes that.
im pretty sure though, that it will fit just fine. i was hoping to do the same thing actualy

According to the Ford Windsor Small block Performance book these are the engine dimensions:
302 351
Overall length 27 1/2" 27 1/2"
Overall width 18 3/4" 21"
Overall height 20 3/4" 23 3/4"
So to clarify, the 351 is said to be 2 1/4' wider and 3" taller

oh really? my bad
well, you learn something every day.
although i still dont think you need to worry about shock tower probs. measure the distance from the 289/302 you have in you stang to your shock towers. i think there will be enough space...
but i was wrong before, and i could be again. good luck!

this is a common swap. You will be restricted on headers, simply too close to the shock towers. Some folks stick with CI manifolds to avoid this issue.
Sometimes height is an issue with the stock hood - avoid by getting a scoop
someone who has the combo can certainly help you out. If not here, try www.vintage-mustang.com

I've done it.....fits fine but headers can be an issue. Tubular Automotive in Rockland, Massachussetts makes headers for a 351W into a 65-66 with a 4 speed(I still have a new set here I never used).

My son and I did this on a 66 4 spd he had some years back. Very easy bolt in, we didnt use the 289 motor mounts, but I cant recall what we did use. It had headers, but we had problems with keeping them tight and went to a stock exhaust manifold. It had a preformer rpm intake and a edlebrock carb. No hood clearance problems at all. Biggest downside was getting plugs in and out. Very tight. Never had any problems with the engine/exhaust hitting shock towers.

Were there any downsides to a 351w in a 65-66, or is it all good ?
