302 timing question

I have a 302 in my 68. The only thing that has been done to it (to my knowledge) is a beefed up cam. The car seems to cut out from time to time and I thought it was going to be another carb issue, but my neighbor put his timing light on it and it read 10 deg. He's a Chevy guy and said that was too much for a Chevy, but wasn't sure about the Ford 302. He thinks 10 deg of timing may be too much and that is what's causing the car to cut out. Any advice here? Thanks in advance.

i would think timing is something that is set firm and should not be fluctuating hence causing you an intermittant missfire .. timing does`nt move around .. if you still have points type ignition i`d suspect that area first .. plus a more definate description of when symptoms occur may help .. missfire under hard acceleration .. stumble upon stopping .. etc etc

The timing for your 302 would be 6 degrees BTDC if it were stock. When your symptoms occur, are they happening while driving or just sitting and idling? If while driving, under load? When the engine is cold or warm? -Basically what HOSS was asking from you- you need to be more specific with the symptoms.

Sorry guys........The symptoms are these, starts to cut out when accellerating from a stop, not hard accelerating, just normal driving. Cuts out going around corners when you start to accelerate out of the corner, again just normal driving here, not hard driving. Also when letting off the accelerator for whatever reason and re-accelerating it starts to cut out. Only seems to happen in 1st and 2nd gear......it's an auto too, in case that makes a difference. Thanks again guys.

hold the brake pedal down firm and give it a little gas while in gear and see if it misses under a load .. may be plug wires breaking down .. look at the engine run at nite while nice and dark and look for spark jump ..
