302 swap

I seem to be doing something wrong here. I have tried a few different pulleys (stuck with the v belt for now). I my crankshaft pulley and my water pump pulley are rubbing. I can't find a smaller pulley though.

Any suggestions on what to try next?

This is still the '87 engine? I'm assuming it has an 87 water pump on there too? And a 3 or 4 bolt balancer?

I'm not 100% sure, but the water pump pulley location for the later serp systems might be different than the v-belt ones. My 80 block has a 60s water pump and older 3 bolt balancer and the v-belt style clear just fine.

Hopefully someone with a little more experience can chime in.

Yes it is the 87 engine. The water pump I believe is a 68 though. The guy at o Reilly's suggested to get march pulleys.

I won't have time until tomorrow, but I'll take a picture of what I've it going in. I think my pump is 69.

Is it possible the crank or pump pulley are too big causing the interference? Someone who has worked on both generation engines would need to chime in and provide more information. I'm assuming the blocks are the same so swapping the pump and crank pulleys would give you the same setup. I'm only going off of the one data point - my engine, so the rest is speculation on my part.

That's what I was thinking. But I could not find any pulleys that were smaller. I ended up just sucking it up and ordering the march pulley system. Their smaller and it will allow me to have a serpentine system instead of the v belts.

Definitely finding a lot of small areas that are becoming big headaches. Lots of exchanged parts! Hopefully this weekend I will finally have it together now. I will take pictures for you all to see.

It sounds like a somewhat common issue since there are a variety I pulley diameters...check this out:

Let me know what pulley system you're going with. Eventually this might be something I want to look into, so let me know how it goes!
