OK guys,

How do I tell if my '72 Grande has 28 spline or 31 spline axles. I have been sort of shopping for a 2nd center section w/higher gear ratio. It has a 9" rear and currently runnig 4:11s. Not very Highway friendly with the 3 speed FMX. And since I am getting the tranny rebuilt I was thinking about something like 3:73 gears (or in that range) to make cruising a little easier on the Gas milage. I saw that there were a bunch on Ebay. I might just buy a used housing then build it myself, but I did see some decent prices on whole units.

So the question 28 or 31, what do I have? I beleive the axles are factory stock.

almost certainly 28, esp if you car came with a 302, 351, etc. you could pull an axle and count, you have to pull it anyway to replace the chunk.....
