1968 Shelby GT 500 Engines Question

Hey all, I had heard that somewhere in 1968 Shelby ran out of the 428 engines for the GT 500, what was the engine he used as a replacement?

no

in 1967 GT500 used the 428 Police Intercepter... and then in 68 switched to the Cobra Jet.

Those are the only engines used in the 67-70's GT500s

no thats not right either!

no shelby dident run out of motors , in 1968 the BIG suprise was the KING OF THE ROAD introduced mid year! they stoll the name from gm before they could use it. the 1968 shelby GT-500 came with the 428 PI when the introduced the 1968 gt-500 KR mid year it was also to introduce the NEW 428 COBRA JET! so 1968 shelbys came with both the 428 PI and after the mid year gt-500KR they had 428 cobra jets!

C'mon guys, have you done any research?

Look at the engines available for Shelbys.
Were you even born before '68?

I am not sure what you are implying, but, yes, I was born in 68, and no, the 390 was not availible for the Shelby's ever!

If you know someone that had a 390 in their Shelby it is because the original motor was taken out for some reason or another

"In 1968 the Shelby models got some added trim features, but the power and models themselves remained the same, with the exception of the new GT500KR, which stood for King of the Road. These were dressed up models, packed with the 428 cubic inch engine, while the G.T.500 came with the 390 engine"

Hey, maybe it is just a figment of our imagination.

Well, there is a good example of why you shouldn't always believe what you read.
I am not sure that this discussion is really that important, but that article is wrong. The 390 was never used in the GT500 67 or 68.

If it is that important maybe find a second source like a Shelby book.

Wasn't it the 390 an "S" code on the regular GT? I think that must be why he said it was a 390.
I've never heard of having 2 different engines in the same year and same model with the same code.
If that is true my old boss had a 428 and didn't know it. (and he was selling Mustangs back then)

People are starting misinformation here.

The only engines ever in a GT500 are 428 PI, 428 CJ and 5.4 SC.

And for the Record the GT500KR does not have any more power then a standard GT500...and this is from Carrol Shelby's mouth. There was an article about this in Mustang Monthly a few years back.

I kindly disagree, nothing like that is being started here. We are just trying to work out the kinks

the diffrence between the gt500KR and the gt500 is 438 cj ( kr) and 428 pi ( gt500)

GT500 .
·428 C.I.D./360 H.P. 'Police Interceptor' short block
·Ford 410 heads
·'COBRA' leMans' finned aluminum valve covers (Black crinkle finish)
·Aluminum hi-rise PI intake manifold
·Holley 715 CFM carburetors
·'COBRA' finned aluminum oval air cleaner
·Power steering mandatory
·Air conditioning optional

Optional 427 engine-while this option appeared on the original factory dealer literature no such option was ever offered (it was cancelled after the literature had been printed); some larger dealers may have installed these engines on customer request and doubtless owners made the swap themselves.

GT500KR
·428 C.I.D./360 H.P. 'Police Interceptor' short block
·428 Cobra-Jet Heads
·Cast Iron Cobra-Jet Intake Manifold
·735 CFM Holley Carburetor
·'COBRA leMans' finned aluminum valve covers (Black krinkle-finish)
·Functional Ram-Air 'Air Cleaner' Assembly

Actually the 390 was offered in a 68 shelby but pulled for the 428 because of problems with it, you guys forgot the 427 -factory install code is "W" rare but they were offered also.
