Everyone seems to overlook the fact that horsepower was measured differently back in "the day". Back then, manufacturers ran an engine on a stand without power robbing accessories, and today they are required to run them as they appear in the car. I've heard that you can estimate a 30% difference between the two techniques.

Mark is right on. The only minor variation is that today the manufacturers can basically advertise/rate them however they please ... they only get into trouble when they overrate them. Ahhh the 1999 SVT Cobra
