Road & Track has just announced the results of its Performance Car of the Year awards, and things wound up in Ford’s favor. Despite facing off against seven other competitors that include names like Ferrari, Porsche, and Bentley, it was the cheapest car of the pack that took home the final win. It was Ford’s Mustang Shelby GT350R that won over the hearts, minds, and throttle feet of the various editors.

The test itself consisted of two days of bombing around some of the best roads in America, between Kentucky and Tennessee. Then R&T ended up at the track that was just built outside the back door of the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. After the two days of wild driving on road, each car was beaten and flogged on the track before getting a solid lap time. At the end of the first day at the track, the field was cut in half, with the Viper, Corvette, Ferrari, and the Mustang left standing.

In the end, everyone loved the power, feel, and purity of the GT350R, which is ultimately why the Shelby took home the prize. But don’t take my word for it. Head over to Road & Track and read the excellent news for yourself. There is also an incredible collection of photography you won’t want to miss (a sampling of such is shown below).
