Ford Announces the Shelby GTE

For more than 50 years, there has been one word synonymous with performance and power when it comes to a Ford Mustang: Shelby. The all-new Shelby GTE is a continuation of that tradition. Inspired by the success of the Shelby GT and Shelby GT-H programs, the Shelby GTE now delivers a performance package upgrade for current Mustang owners.

At a starting price of $17,999 on top of the purchase price of a Mustang, the performance package is not exactly what we would call cheap. Especially when most of these upgrades are geared toward appearance items. We know this because the performance parts mostly come from Ford Performance, which you as a consumer can purchase for cheaper directly from the Ford catalog.

For example: if you have a V8 and decide you only want the performance bits of the GTE package, you can order a street handling pack, cat-back exhaust, and the Power Pack 2, which includes the same intake and calibration Shelby uses to get an extra 21 horsepower in the GTE. And you can get all this for a total cost of $3,533 from the Ford Performance catalog. Choosing the track handling pack and exhaust with black chrome tips would jump that price up to $3,997.

You could take all those pretty parts over to a local Ford Performance-authorized dealer to be installed for just $500. So for somewhere between $4000 and $45000 all-in, you can pretty much get the same performance as a Shelby GTE.

If you want to spend the full $17,999 for the Shelby GTE performance package, go right ahead, but just know that this puts the GTE only around $4000 under the price of a sweet Ford GT350. A car SavageGeese reviewed as being one of the most insane cars he’s ever driven.

We’re not going to lie though, the GTE looks pretty sweet.
