Rusted out rear wheel axle
I just purchased a new 2013 mustang. I was under the car for the first time the other day and noticed that my rear axle and rear differential are completly covered in rust. Everything else under the car looks good.
Has anyone else seen this on thier new 2013 mustang? is this something that I should have Ford remedy? perhaps aan undercoating or rust resistant paint? Please advise...

its true, just sitting on the lot they all get rusty. yes, its seems all wrong. they really could put something on them. they figure the normal person will never ever see it

well if its true and thats how new mustangs come than my next question is can you paint them? or use some sort of undercoating? if so has anyonee doe this and what product did you use. Rust is not cool with me, have to get rid of it now that I know its there

It's surface rust and it's there by design. It will NOT rust 'out' or through. It actually acts as a protective coating. Sure you can paint over it, but doesn't seem worth the hassle unless it's a show car. If you decide to coat it, POR-15 is a good product.

anyone know what the best way to lift the car? car jack? jack stands or should I use ramps? whats everyone using these days?

The rust is there by design. The metal forms a "surface rust" that prevents any type of deeper rust that would affect the structure/integrity of the piece. T409 stainless steel does this (among others, I'm sure), which is what the GT500 axlebacks are made of. It's purely visual, and Ford doesn't deem it worth coating an axle that 9 times out of 10 (probably more) will never be seen by a consumer.

If you're going to coat the axle, ramps would be the most convenient, out of your way, and generally safest, although I still put jack stands in place for peace of mind.

and there is no doubt in my mind in terms of exterior design, ford did a great job with the 13's... did my first mod and took the rear tires off and was a bit shocked by the amount of rust on the axle. again, ford has to determine whats worth percieved value for thier customers. "I" understand what you say above but others may not.

That's about it. I'm sure there are more but they are smaller. Seems like the bolts that go into the LCAs and such are the same.
