MRT Hood Struts installed (pics) - thoughts/impressions

With my kid's b-day this weekend, I figured the only time I could do this was last night. So at 11 pm, I attempted this install. Took me close to an hour, but most of that time was me trying to figure out a better way to reinstall the sound canister without cutting the rubber. I ended up cutting it anyways... lol.

Install was a breeze, essentially. Nothing anyone could not do with a simple 10mm ratchet (preferably the longer sockets), and a sturdy pair of scissors (to cut the rubber isolator for the sound canister). Everything fit into place perfectly. I also ordered the special paint ones, to match my Kona blue. The paint match was perfect. Now if only the actual MRT struts came in blue too

Raising the hood is the best part.... lift a little, I'd say, 1/3 of the way up, and then the struts take over. It goes up way higher than the stock prop. Awesome.

Lowering the hood is also very easy. Since I don't want to touch the paint of my hood, I just grab the latch in the center of the hood, gently lower, then when I am back to the 1/3 height, just pull and let go. Done.

Many thanks to Jason and the MRT team for the help in ordering, and developing such a great design. This is a simple mod, but IMO, one of the first things you should do. Why a 40k car has a prop rod is beyond me.

Next mods on my list:
FRPP springs - 1.5"
Procal Tuner
GT500 rear spoiler (takeoffs??? best place to buy?)
CS/GT front spoiler
Boss front lip

Here are some pics and vids of the MRT Hood Struts post-install. Comments welcome.

Now the only step left is to use a heat gun on the decal and remove it for a cleaner look

I had the MRT hood struts on my 06. I peeled the MRT logo off for a cleaner look. Love the body color mounts, I need to buy a set for this car.

A cleaner looking engine bay. And my Roush exhaust is loud enough as it is, so I don't need fake engine noise.

Definitely get one! Worth it... I think it's the same design/concept as the 05+

No thanks either... I love the sound of my 5.0 inside, outside, wherever... I don't need it to be muted.

To each their own. I can still hear my exhaust and car plenty, it just got rid of the resonance that didn't sound good.

If you like the sound tube, then def keep it. I just didn't like it.

Also I kept my MRT logos too.

I need a solution that will work with an aftermarket fiberglass hood.

A heat gun??? A little overkill, just pull it off and use WD40.

I think the Redline struts work with any type of hood.

Sound tube delete is a great mod for someone with an exhaust on their car. It gets rid of that hollow pseudo-surround sound exhaust note and makes it sound like a normal car. And, yes, it cleans up the engine bay quite a bit too.

Don't fiberglass hoods use the same hinges? If they do, you could MRT without issue.

I believe the issue is that the struts have more force the the middle of a fiberglass hood can take. The hoods can get warped or cracked.

For those asking about using these with fiberglass hoods, call MRT. They have a different support that works on the fiberglass hoods for the 2005-09 year and no bowing of the hoods. The MRT Cherry6T6 SEMA car has had them on for years and the hood is still straight. You have to ask for the struts for fiberglass hoods or they will send out the stock struts.

Thank you man. Yeah, from what I can see and feel thus far, the quality looks to be top notch. So I am expecting longevity out of this.

Very interesting, regarding the sound canister. I have the GT500s and I think the sound inside the cabin is just fine. If anything, I want it louder even.

Yes good idea... just call MRT. Great folks to work with.

Does this replace any factory hinge or does it mount on top of what's there?

What if the pressure gets lesser over time?

They don't replace the hinges, but use the same mounting bolts.

Many, many people have used them for a long time without issue so I'm not worried about it.

Hood struts and hatchback struts all wear out and need to be replaced through the years. Just saying......................
