You won't see that from the Ford Parts site. That only shows the root part number, without the prefix (which dictates year and model) and suffix (which dictates side, revision, etc.)

It appears that the revised pistons would work in place of the older ones, at least as a set of 8 and a fair chance individually. Depending on how the change notice was written the revised pistons may become the only ones available as service parts.

I believe you'd need to remove the oil squirters and block off the passages from them. Somewhere it was mentioned that Ford Racing has already provided the necessary changes needed to run the updated parts in their crate motors.

The pistons are the same shape underneath so there would be no need to remove the oil squirters. Now whether there is a detrimental effect from running coated pistons and oil squirters, that's another story. I doubt it. I can't think of a reason why there would be.

The only issue I can think of is balance because that little extra that is machined away on the 2013 piston. But in a set of eight that shouldn't be an issue.

Remember, too, the ring pack in the 2013 Coyote is updated, too, meaning the oil scraping characteristics, etc may have changed compared to the 2011-12 Coyotes. With the additional oil drain holes in the new piston -- and additional oil volume -- you may experience a less-than-ideal deluge of oil flowing through and shooting at the undercrown of the piston.

But with the increased drain holes in the lands, could the oil squirters conflict with them?

The revision doesn't always mean a new part. It may also be a new supplier.

No they are still forged. That huge price difference is enough to know that... and the fact that if they pulled them from the car, everyone would be at ford's door step with pitch forks and torches.

Lots of good thought here about the 5.0 changes. It sure would be nice if we had someone from the FoMoCo Coyote engine team answer some of these questions.

I have a late build 12 and hope mine still has the oil squirters. The Engineering behind this engine was one of the big selling points for me. For those not familiar with the inner workings of their 5.0, there was an excellent article in Hot Rod Magazine about it. Here is a link.

That was my first thought too, that Ford made it SOUND like an improvement for marketing reasons. It's like saying the Boss 2012 at 444 hp is more powerful than the 2012 GT at 412 hp. Until you realize they run the Boss at higher rpm to get that number. There's no 32 hp difference between the two in my opinion. It's just Ford being Ford. I guess I'm just cynical.
