Maybe people were confused as to what the button was for. Looks like it could be launch control or something. It doesn't even say off in the 2010/2011.
Just trying to come up with a reason guys. Not saying I like the change at all.

They probably switched other cars over to use the same button and they wanted to only have one part number to cover all the cars it fits so they went to a generic pictogram instead of a Mustang specific one.

Well in all fairness (thanks to dumb people + lawyers) the trunk won't pop if you push that at speed -- but I'd bet dollars to donuts that some idiot will get (or already has gotten) into an accident and will try/tried to sue Ford for not making it more clear that the button wasn't a "burnout button" and turned off his traction control.
There are usually 2 motivating factors for these type of changes:
Legal CYA and cost savings. If you find another Ford that has the same set of switches, it is probably the latter, but (without actually looking) I don't think that there is ...

They changed it for all of the Rear End Haters, that just couldn't pass up the 5.0, but didn't want to have to look at the Rear End every day......
