Popping Sound on Boss 302?
Popping Sound on Boss 302?
Hey lets play a game of "Guess that sound!"
I've heard this before....
You may also be able to hear the rasp sound in the background... (the one I was told was normal forged piston slap.... in 60 degrees.

If that doesn't work...

Wow that is really freaky. Does not sound like any kind of internal engine 'tick' or piston slap. You may want to get a flashlight and a jack and perform a visual inspection of the engine bay, pulley, exhaust, etc. Very weird clickety clack sound, you try to have a helper or 2 stand in front/back/side of your car with the hood open on start up to help isolate the noise...
Bucko, that avatar is really annoying... just in case you were in the mood for unsolicited opinions.
But a clickety clack sound from water dripping onto a hot exhaust? Plausible if this happens after the car has run for a while and then is restarted after its fully warmed up in warm/humid weather... But if only on a cold startup? Not so much...

I was kind of thinking the same thing, I have heard of something similar to that right before the cats puked their guts.

As to the avatar: Glad you like it.

I'm with these guys. You might also check for a loose idler bolt or a dry (degreased) idler spring. That sound won't necessarily change with engine speed. You can put a wooden stick on the suspect area and listen to the other end to help localize where the noise is coming from. Just beware of moving parts so you don't jam it through your head!
So maybe I'll get that one guy at work to hold the wooden stick.
Right now, it's not making the noise (which is even more frustrating) so I can't take it to the dealer.... or can I? I mean, honestly, would the techs take a look at something that isn't "currently" making the sound?
btw, thanks for all the replies everyone and sorry it has taken me a couple days to respond.

I recommend you having your dealer check it out as well. Let me know if you want me to escalate this for you as well.

I did take it to the dealer but the "popping" sound never came back. One time only.
The other rattles were finally assessed as a bad starter. New starter fixed it completely!
