Sound deadener install

Sound deadener/vibration damper here's what I did. I used stuff similar to dynamat it was just a tad thinner. I don't think it mattered much but I did double up in some spots. I used about 160sq ft which was about 16 pounds. I also used sticky backed acoustic foam to kill some unwanted noise. I got this stuff from work in bits and pieces so I'm not real sure how much I used. Rough guess would be maybe 40 or 50 sq ft.

I started in the trunk. I removed all panels and pretty much stuck this stuff anywhere I could. In the 1/4 panels I did both sides the 1/4 and adjacent panels then added the foam. I wasn't to worried about getting every sq inch or the neatness factor. No one will ever see it, not to bad tho.
Pretty wild you can see all the way up to the the door jam area.
I figured there would be a wall in there somewhere.
I did as far as I could reach. Should have had one of the neighbor kids climb in there. lol
before

and before I applied all the foam

That black thing in there is because I don't carry a spare. that stops the board from caving in when I haul stuff.
I also took some foam and made a donut out of two pieces stuck together for in there. I put all my excess material in there when I was done.
The left 1/4 has more stuff in the way so less material is needed there. Doing the trunk and 1/4 panels made a HUGE difference in sound quality in the car. I drove for a week and then started doing the int.

I removed the rear seat and panels back there. I did not remove the 1/4 window plastic trim. I also removed the seat belt return deal. That is how I did the forward parts of the rear 1/4 panels.
You can see in the pic above where the gap is that I couldn't reach and then the foam in the forward area. I believe it was worth the effort just from tapping on the outside of the 1/4 panel.

Next thing I did was remove the head liner. Not to bad just a little bit of effort to get it out through the door out of the way.

coolest thing I found was that piece of paper hanging there. Not much info on it. Does anyone have any incite as to what else was on it?

some after shots

installed the foam all the way around, in the pillars next to the windshield and just slide some foam down the rear plastic trim around the rear window.
A before and after vid

I did the doors last no foam in there didn't know how dry it would stay.
I made 2 more back to back pieces out of the foam and just slide them under the front seats. They are about 1'x15" or so. I didn't remove the front seats or the carpet. I have been thinking about getting some liquid stuff for the ext floor boards and wheel wheels. I am not sure if I should bother doing anything with the front fenders or not. I think it would help just don't know how much.

Getting It Done!

Glenn: Very aggressive work getting after all that road noise in there! If there is one complaint about the original S-197's for me, it is this excess road noise issue with them! Wanting to possibly tackle this type of project on the CalStang in our shop this winter. Just have not decided which way to go or how extensive I want to get with some of the sound deadeners yet.

Thanks for the show and tell on your own application Bro!! "RC"

I'm not kidding how big of a difference it made just to do the trunk and 1/4 panels. It took about two hours or so to do that area maybe a little less. I did do the car in sections over a few day period instead of taking everything apart at once. It was less daunting that way.

Awesome job! I too have had pretty much the ENTIRE interior apart and deadened most of it. I did the roof as well and if I may offer a suggestion.

The roof after sound deadener (sticky butyl edead) made a big difference, but just didn't seem like enough in my opinion. I will say at this point I had done 80% of the entire interior.

I added RAAMAudio's ensolite foam to the roof and WHOA what a difference! Much like the eggcrate foam you stuffed in the voids (I did this as well) the ensolite is a sound BARRIER not really a deadener. I can't even hear rain hit the roof anymore! It's great!

LOL, it's not bad at all and no problem. Nice to see someone else besides myself wants to go fast and not hear every squeak and rattle.

I deadened (butyl edead) the floor but haven't ensolited yet. I honestly think the floor was easier to do than the roof.

Of all the things I have deadened, the biggest differences to my ears have surprised me.....

I thought deadening/ensoliting the trunk (floors, decklid, spare tire well) and 1/4's would make the most difference but the the roof, floor and FRONT fenders made the biggest difference.

The front fenders are VERY simple to do; butyl for the fenders and paint on deadener on the splash shields:

I removed both the front splash sields and used edead V3. (can be painted on with a brush it's a pudding-like consistency) I did 3 light coats on the INSIDE of the splash shields and also deadened the inside of the fenders with the butyl stuff. Made a HUGE difference and was much easier than all the entire removal crap.

Glenn,

Spot on! The peel and stick is MUCH MUCH easier to use than the regular ensolite (have to use spray adhesive).

Under the carpet right now is edead 45 only. I ran out of ensolite I got a little crazy on the doors and was quite short for the floor. Edead only helped a little but I need to get the ensolite on there.

Here is the first layer on the headliner, edead 45:

And then ensolited:

The wheel wells got the same treatment:

Hope this helps.

I did end up doing the floors. It made a difference just not a huge difference. Glad I did it tho. Still haven't done the front fenders yet.

Hey Glenn, one other question...

When you did the doors, I presume you peeled back the plastic moisture barrier, how do you get it to re-stick when you do that?

I will have to search for the floor pictures. Pretty unexciting stuff. The plastic on the doors just sticks back in place. No problems there.

Yes very sorry. I forget how much I spent. In my first post I stated I used about 160 sqft. That would put the cost around 200 but you will have some left over going with the amazon link. I got mine from a couple of different places when I saw this stuff was on sale. A quick google search netted me this
Amazon.com : GTMAT 100 sqft Automotive Sound Deadening 50mil PRO - Acoustic Dampening Installation Kit Includes: 100sqft 2 Rolls (18in X 33ft), Instruction Sheet, Application Roller, Degreaser, GT MAT Decals : Vehicle Speaker Installation : Car Electronics Amazon.com : GTMAT 100 sqft Automotive Sound Deadening 50mil PRO - Acoustic Dampening Installation Kit Includes: 100sqft 2 Rolls (18in X 33ft), Instruction Sheet, Application Roller, Degreaser, GT MAT Decals : Vehicle Speaker Installation : Car Electronics
I also used this place but the price seems high right now.

You can also check the home improvement stores in the roofing dept. They have rolls of roofing seem type stuff. Its about 10" wide and I forget how long the roll is. But that stuff works very well for the low cost. Don't laugh.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question and for the links.
I was reading that nothing compares to Dynamat Xtreme sound proofing.
Though this stuff is really expensive.
In your experience, can you say your ride is now quieter with the cheaper stuff and I don't need to go the expensive route?
