The IIs and the 2013MY are definitely cousins.
But I'll let y'all guess as to why. Excepting the pony emblem itself, and the Ford nameplate, there is one other distinguishing feature of the '74-'78 IIs and the 2013.
Don't cheat! Here's the riddle:
Name the direct tie-in between a Mustang II and the current 2013 Mustang. I mean *DIRECT*, no other Mustangs have this particular feature. I'll wait as ya think about it...
Give up? Here's a hint: Go find a picture of the front of a Mustang II, any year. Then go find a picture of the front of a 2013 Mustang, any style. Should be obvious when you see it now...

The 2013 Mustang is the first and only other Mustang since the '74 to '78 Mustang IIs to NOT have the hood be the 'top' of the grille area.
Isn't that special? A friend of mine pointed it out, and I didn't really believe him. Then I went picture hunting. Unless it was a *supremely special* model, only these 5 years do not have the top of the grille area topped off by the hood in some way, but instead the grilles are completely surrounded by a fully separate piece from the hood.
So. This proves it beyond a doubt: IIs are awesome, and 2013s are using their design cue.

Granted, they're churning out more Shelbys and such, but this is the key. Yes, the Shelbys did have them, but I wasn't countin' those. I know, it could be argued about what constitutes 'supremely special', but that's splittin' hairs.
The Base and GTs and other 'mainstream' models do not have this feature, except in '74-78 and now 2013. All others have the hood as the top.
Meh. It's just a silly little comparison anyway, I'm not gonna argue the point much.

It's more important to know why the Mustang is going away from having the front edge of the hood be the top of the grille opening. It's simply because the grille design is evolving into something more forward thrusting and crash standards cannot have the front of the hood too far forward without significant damage in lower speed collisions. So the hood has to be set back into the top of the front bumper fascia. With the next generation Mustang coming soon, they probably want to abandon the park bench stepped front bumper and use a smoother looking front end like the Evos. With the front edge of the hood set back into the front fascia, the grille can be aggressively thrusted forward with the headlamps canted back on the ends.
