Shelby Little Red and Green Hornet Mustangs have now given birth to a series of limited-edition timepieces.

The Shelby Little Red and Green Hornet Mustangs are two of the more famous models in the illustrious history of pony cars, and both have been rediscovered and brought back to their former glory in recent years. These two prototypes, both of which were owned by Carroll Shelby at one point, were once thought lost to history, but both have since been recovered and restored. Now, rather interestingly, excess metal from the Shelby Red and Green Hornet is being used to make watches.

In what might be the most unique recycling effort in history, Craig Jackson, of Barrett-Jackson fame, is teaming up with REC Watches to produce 318 watches using excess sheet metal from the restoration of the Red Hornet, and 282 made from the Green Hornet’s scraps. The rest of the details are a bit vague as of now, as REC will officially reveal both watches and open up ordering on January 14.

“The Little Red and Green Hornet watch project has been more than a year in development, as we wanted to make sure that we did justice to the pedigree and story of these two incredible vehicles,” said REC Watches co-founder Jonathan Kamstrup. “We knew these two cars were special, but it was only through working with Barrett-Jackson on developing these timepieces that we truly understood exactly how special. I am very proud that we have been a part of making the story of Little Red and Green Hornet come back to life!”

“REC Watches has gone to extraordinary means to find unique artifacts and put these into a brand new timepiece. They keep the patina and build the watch to represent the vehicle. There wasn’t much excess sheet metal to work with for REC Watches. But there was enough to build these unique watches in very limited numbers,” Jackson added.

Little Red was originally ordered by Carroll Shelby after he returned from Le Mans in 1966, where Ford secured its first overall win at the historic race. It served as his experimental car for some time but was eventually lost to history until it was rediscovered in rural North Texas by Jackson’s team in 2018.

Meanwhile, the Green Hornet served as an experimental styling car for Shelby after it was gifted to him by Ford. Shelby also used it to tinker with the car’s secret new tech, which included electronic fuel injection, an idea that was still rather far fetched back in the late 1960s.

These unique watches, crafted from literal pieces of history, can be pre-ordered beginning January 14 by heading over here.
