Ford Mustang’s Entire History in 11 Minutes
Need a refresher on America’s most famous car? Watch this video.
The Ford Mustang has been around for decades. It’s easily one of the most iconic cars on the road today. Forgetting the malaise Mustang II, no matter what decade it’s from, you can’t mistake the sleek lines and roaring engine of the classic Pony car. The Donut Media video above gives you everything you need to know about the Mustang, from beginning to modern day. Now here are our thoughts about our favorite car’s illustrious 53-year history.
It Arrives
The Mustang made its first appearance at the 1964 World’s Fair, and originally used the chassis from the Ford Falcon, their sedan at the time. At the same time the car made its premiere, it had already been shipped to dealerships around the country. Ford sold 22,000 pony cars after just the first day of sales.
Introducing the Cobra
One year after its launch, the newest incarnation of the Mustang started taking shape. Carroll Shelby modified a Mustang 289 V8 engine to get another 35 horsepower. Marketed as a “race car for the street,” this car sold for nearly twice the price of the classic ’65 model, and managed to win a few racing championships.
Cobra Jet Engine
To stay ahead of the competition, in 1968 Ford introduced the Mach 1 Mustang with a 428-cubic-inch race engine named the Cobra Jet. Next was the Mustang II — a dark spot in ‘Stang history. This hatchback looked like a Pinto and had a smaller engine, so it cost less to fuel. Again, we like to forget about the Mustang II.
’80s Ford Mustang Fox Body
In the 80s, Ford released the Fox unibody chassis and new turbocharged engines, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Mustang’s sales where they needed to be. This didn’t prevent diehard fans from revolting when Ford proposed an idea to change the Mustang into a front-wheel-drive design.
Keep the Changes Coming
The ’90s saw a return to curves, and the mid-’00s saw more of a muscle-themed, retro look. The sixth-generation Mustang came out in 2015, and is one of the best-looking generations ever, but within a few years we’ll likely see another redesign. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
