Depreciation Shock! Taking a 2018 Mustang To CarMax

By -

Buying a new Mustang is a dream for most people. But how much does it depreciate once you drive it off the lot?

New car depreciation: Many of us avoid it like the plague, while others love having the newest and best on the market. After all, the excitement of having something that no one else has only lasts about six months.

New cars – especially first-year models – are going to be where you pay the most since the manufacturer is looking for strong initial sales numbers. So, what premium do you pay for having the brand new, top-of-the-line model?

This video from YouTube personality EcoBeast shows his experience buying a new, fully-loaded 2018 Mustang GT, then getting it appraised by CarMax. He paid $51,555, with all options except magnetic suspension.

But at CarMax, they mention that the offer is skewed due to the winter season. CarMax thoroughly inspects the car and gets him an offer: A sad $28,000 for a three-week-old car with less than 1,500 miles on it.

So, there really is a season to sell cars. We must remember that CarMax’s offers are usually well below what you can sell a car for privately. The advantage of CarMax is the convenience of having them buy it without the need to buy a car from them. Good thing EcoBeast went to CarMax out of curiosity and isn’t actually desperate to sell the car. In fact, he loves his car and has no intention of selling it. We at The Mustang Source love the new 2018 Mustang. What’s more, we’d love to hear what you think of new car depreciation. Let us know about your experiences in the comments below.
