Stellar 1996 Mystic Ford Mustang SVT Cobra recently went up for sale as one of just 2,000 built in that particular model year.

In the realm of the iconic Ford Mustang, there have been many special models and features fans have had to choose from, and that includes paint colors, of course. Among the various interesting hues pony car fans have been offered over the past six decades, one could argue that Mystic Clearcoat Metallic (or its successor, Mystichrome) is easily the most unique, and perhaps the coolest. Today, Mystic Ford Mustang SVT Cobra models like this 1996 example are coveted collectibles, and this one recently hit the auction block looking for a new home, too.

This 1996 Mystic Ford Mustang SVT Cobra is number 1,897 of 2,000 built in this particular model year, and it went up for grabs at Bring a Trailer recently with a reasonable 69k miles on the clock. The seller actually purchased the color-shifting machine back in 2013 and has since done quite a bit of work to it, rebuilding the original 4.6-liter V8 and its Borg-Warner T45 five-speed manual transmission, along with adding a BBK X-pipe, a Flowmaster cat-back exhaust system, a billet flywheel, a McLeod clutch, and JBA exhaust headers, plus new brake pads and rotors.

On the outside, that rather pricey and special paint remains in great condition, though the seller has touched up some rock chips on the front bumper, anyway. The Cobra is fitted with a set of non-original American Muscle FR500-style wheels, which are wrapped with 245/45 front and 275/40 rear Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, though a series of cracks is showing their age – and need for replacement.

Peek inside the cabin, and one will find a black leather interior that shows quite a bit of wear on the seats, as is common with vehicles of this age and from this era, though that’s mostly limited to creasing – not rips and tears, anyway. The pony car is equipped with a short throw shifter for spirited driving sessions, and remains stock inside. Otherwise, the engine itself – rebuilt by Jasper Engines in 2022 – comes with a warranty, so that gives the new owner a little peace of mind.

Given how rare these Mystic Ford Mustang SVT Cobra models are – and there certainly aren’t 2,000 of them still around today – we don’t doubt that this example will conjure up plenty of interest at auction, though it’ll be interesting to see what it hammers for, given its flaws – and mechanical rebuild, in spite of its lower mileage.
