Hot Rod Mag’s Hottest Mustang Trends From the Sixties

Remember back when they offered fiberglass bodies for the 1966 Mustangs?

Neither do I, but apparently it was one of a few interesting custom trends the Ford pony car spurred during some of the early days of the American icon. Mustang 360 has dug up many of the more popular early Mustang trends, in a piece that serves as a pretty good history piece on the car.

Pulled from the pages of 1965-1967 issues of Hot Rod magazine, the report covers everything from aftermarket dyno-tune kits to the availability of a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission in the ‘66 Ford 271hp 289 K-code Mustang.

Altogether, the Mustang 360 story covers 16 trends, including a 64-page Cobra parts catalog with a host of accessories. Some of the things on the list, which you can read here in its entirety, might seem like a bit of stretch, even for the sixties. But we imagine some of today’s custom Mustang trends may seem a bit outdated too, somewhere down the road.
