7th Generation Mustang Confirmed To Have Three Pedals

Manual elitists rejoice! Ford’s teaser of the 7th Generation Mustang promises us that we can row our own gears.

You’re bound to hear it. “Automatics are faster!” And on paper, yes they are. However, from a driving excitement standpoint, automatics are about as engaging as those folks who call you about your extended warranty.

And we bring that up because Ford’s teaser for the 7th generation Mustang includes confirmation that a proper transmission will be available for Ford’s pony. In the O of “generation,” Ford very clearly has placed an H-pattern. They know enthusiasts still drive this car. Our friends over at Ford Truck Enthusiasts have showcased how the Blue Oval actually listens to customers, offering a manual on the Sasquatch package equipped Bronco.

Without proper details, we can’t say exactly which models will and won’t get the manual. But it’s pretty easy to assume that any of the 4 and 8 cylinder options will have it. Will the 7th generation ‘Stang have a twin turbo V6? It’s possible. But we’d imagine that shift away from tradition would be paired with an equally unorthodox transmission.

We do know though that the S650 Mustang will soldier on with internal combustion. At least for now. Spy shots give us obvious hints that a V8 lurks under the hood of GT models.

Keep in mind, the S550 has been around since 2015. A 7 year run for any platform is solid, and the S550 added significant sophistication over the S197 it replaced. We can expect the S650 is going to be an evolution of the S550 rather than a complete re-think of the Mustang. Though to be fair, it does say “all new.”

While internal combustion will remain, this will likely be the first generation of Mustang where electrification is the norm. It is entirely possible that an electrified Mustang could also have a manual transmission. Ford has even recently patented an electric clutch for manual transmissions according to Motor Authority. This clutch-by-wire scenario would eliminate the mechanical connection to the clutch and potentially rid the car of a clutch pedal completely. But we’d have to imagine that Ford knows who they sell cars to, and include it just because.
