2024 Ford Mustang Shelby Super Snake Is the S650 GT500 We Can Buy
While we await the arrival of a new king of the hill, the 2024 Ford Mustang Shelby Super Snake gives us an 800+ horsepower alternative.
As the long-running S550-generation Mustang was winding down and preparing to make way for the new S650 generation to take over, Ford went ahead and killed off the Shelby GT500 a year early, in 2022. It was a somber occasion given the fact that the S550 GT500 was the most powerful production pony car in history, an amazing machine that offered up amazing performance. When the S650 debuted, it did so without a GT500 variant, and it’s unclear when or if such a thing may come along at the moment. However, the all-new 2024 Shelby Super Snake certainly looks like a suitable replacement.
Built by Shelby American, the 2024 Shelby Super Snake features a full array of upgrades, as has historically been the case. Those start on the outside with a noticeably wider front fascia, a unique grille and front splitter with wickers, and an aluminum Super Snake hook with carbon fiber extractors and hood pins. Moving down the side, the newest Super Snake gets a carbon fiber wide body, vented front fenders, a carbon fiber rear diffuser, a ducktail spoiler, and of course, a full array of Shelby Super Snake badging and signature stripes with magnesium wheels underneath.
Inside the cabin, Shelby treats the S650 Super Snake to its own branding in a host of places – the floor mats, shifter ball, door sills, dash plaque, and puddle lamps, in fact, while drop tops also get a light bar for good measure. However, the big news lies under the hood, where a supercharged 5.0-liter Coyote V8 makes 830 horsepower thanks to that big upgrade, which is accompanied by a Shelby/Borla exhaust and extreme cooling system. Performance half shafts help get that power to the ground without breakage, and there’s also a one-piece driveshaft and hardened wheel studs, to boot.
Based on the GT with the 401A Performance Pack, the 2024 Shelby Super Snake can be had in fastback or convertible form and with a manual or automatic transmission. However, as one might expect, it won’t be built in huge quantities – just 250 units are planned for the U.S. this particular model year, with a few more slated for the rest of the globe. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet either, but we imagine that the new Super Snake will have more than its fair share of interested parties, regardless, especially given the lack of a proper rival from The Blue Oval at the moment.
