2020 Shelby GT500 Does 0-100-0 Faster Than Just About Anything Else
Ford resurrects an ages-old statistic to prove just how good the GT500 is at accelerating, shifting, and braking.
Much ado has been made about the C8 Corvette recently, to the point where a lot of folks are digging an early grave for the Shelby GT500 before it’s even actually on the road. And, well, that’s a mistake in our opinion. We still don’t know what the new GT500 is actually capable of, for the most part. But Ford recently dug up an ages old Carroll Shelby favorite statistic to (kinda) give us some hope.
That stat – 0-100-0, a feat that Shelby’s 427-powered Cobra famously did in just 13.6-seconds. At the time, that was over 10-seconds faster than just about anything else on the road, a true testament to the car’s incredible power and braking ability. And while most manufacturers don’t really use this statistic anymore, Ford is going old school, touting the new GT500’s 0-100-0 time of just 10.6-seconds.
Which, well, seems fast. But since most automakers don’t measure this feat anymore, how do we put it into perspective? Well, we can look to Motor Trend, who did a nice job estimating some numbers of other cars. If accurate, the GT500 is over 2-seconds fast than the Camaro 1LE, Shelby GT350, and PP2 GT. They also estimate that the car will do 0-100 in a blistering 3.9-seconds, which is undoubtedly impressive.
We can also put this number in perspective by looking at some recent hypercars. The GT500 is faster than the mighty McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT, Pagani Zonda, and Ferrari F40, to name a few. Yes, these are “older” supercars, but this is still impressive nonetheless. And it’s virtually impossible to compare the GT500 to new ones because nobody tests 0-100-0 anymore.
Aside from the car’s 760 raging horsepower, there are a couple of other important factors in making this happen. The new Tremec dual-clutch 7-speed transmission shifts in a lightning-quick 80 milliseconds in Sport mode. The GT500’s massive 16.5″ front rotors are the largest fitted to any domestic sports coupe. And the car’s Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires offer up prodigious amounts of grip for leaping off the line.
Now, we’re just waiting to find out what the GT500’s 0-60 time is. And you can bet we’re secretly holding out hope that it’s going to be sub 3.0-seconds, and at least quick enough to beat the C8!
