2014 vs 2015 Ford Mustang GT (1)

When Ford finally released the first few 2015 Mustangs to the press, everyone was waiting for some outlet to put the new car up against the previous generation to see just how far the Ford had come. The only real way of showing that this car is a step into the future would be for it to go head-to-head with its forbear.

While my expert opinion says “really not that much” after driving the new GT, I didn’t have the last generation on hand to really detect all the differences between the two cars. However, our friends over at Autoweek just so happened to have both on hand to play around with. Here’s what they found.

While the new Mustang is billed as potentially quicker than the old model, that extra 100 lbs. from the IRS system negates the extra horsepower and torque. Add to the fact that while the new car feels more refined, it tends to have much more body roll than the outgoing model; a fact to which I can attest.

I’d love to do a similar test with both the outgoing model and the new model as well. As I stated in my EcoBoost article, that car felt miles more planted and tossable than the GT did.

Ford had a lot to live up to with the new Mustang, especially with ditching the solid rear axle. Did they get it completely right? No, not at all. Are they on the right track to make an epic platform for years to come? You can bet your socks the answer is yes.
