Crashed 1967 Mustang

Mustang rear-ends another car during event, but driver and family put it back together in time to finish the race.

The Hot Rod Power Tour is a grueling week-long event consisting of racing at a different speedway every day, with road trips in between. For most, getting in an accident mid-trip would be the end of the road. However, 20-year-old Cole Phillips had other plans.

Hot Rod reports that during a crowded gas stop, a combination of old-school drum brakes and damp conditions caused Phillips to slam his 67 Fastback Mustang into the back of a Camaro. While most would end their trip there, Phillips and his family decided not to.

“My dad and little brother jumped in his truck and drove to the closest auto parts store to look for a radiator that would fit,” said Phillips.

Upon returning with a Toyota radiator, they found that it was a bit too tall. However, since the hood was already damaged, they cut it to make some room. A set of bungee cords held the ensemble together.

“It’s weird, people love that it’s wrecked and want me to leave it that way…” said Phillips, regarding driving it with the damaged front end.

Phillips and his dad built this Mustang together when he was 15, and he has been daily driving it ever since. Between work and school, he puts around 5,000 miles on the car per month. Having done some extensive work such as adding air conditioning, swapping to a 5-Speed manual and an EFI conversion leaves no doubt that the vehicle will be brought back to its previous state. Phillips even stated that he has a donor car with all the parts he needs to rebuild the front end.

We all can learn something here, albeit a bit cliche. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. You can’t let a little mishap bring down your aspirations! Things are going to get in your way from time to time, but like Phillips and his family prove, there is always a solution.
