What's Old is New Again

Steve McQueen's name has become synonymous with next level cool and an era where men were men. Much of his legacy is tied to the 1968 crime thriller Bullitt where McQueen portrays San Francisco Detective Frank Bullitt. Aside from McQueen, the real star of the film is the 1968 Ford Mustang GT390. The images of McQueen jumping and sliding the Mustang through the hilly streets of San Francisco are so legendary that Ford has made several special edition Bullitt Mustangs over the years. Debuting in 2001, the Bullitt edition Mustang has always been about restrained, subtle styling, a V8 soundtrack, and a manual transmission. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the movie, Ford debuted the third iteration Bullitt at the Detroit Auto Show this past January. Click along to see what Ford has in store for us.

Green With Envy

Similar to past versions, the 2019 Bullitt is only available in two colors: Highland Green and Shadow Black. In reality, there's only one color to pick, Highland Green. If you're going to imitate Steve McQueen, you better do it right.

A Coyote With Voodoo Magic

The Bullitt is available with only one engine: the naturally-aspirated, 5.0 liter, Coyote V8. In normal Mustang GT form, the five-point-oh puts out a hearty 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. To satisfy Bullitt enthusiasts, the Coyote motor has been reworked with the intake manifold off the Shelby GT350's 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 and a larger 87 mm throttle body.

A Movie-Worthy Soundtrack

Unique to the Bullitt is a black Nitroplate quad-exit exhaust. With 4 tips, the Bullitt is sure to sing like the 1968 GT390's. The driver is completely in charge of shift points as the Bullitt's only available transmission is a six-speed manual. Falling at the right hand of the driver is a white cue ball styled shifter.

More Than a Badge

The almost $12,000 upcharge over a base Mustang GT is money well spent. By ordering a Bullitt, your Mustang will come standard with several features usually reserved for the Performance Pack Mustangs. Included with the Bullitt price tag are Brembo front brakes, active exhaust, a limited-slip differential and suspension upgrades. The top speed has also been upped to an impressive 163 mph.

Special Shoes

The 2019 comes with model-specific 19-inch aluminum wheels which are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Hiding behind the wheels are the aforementioned Brembo front brakes.

Familiar Styling Cues

Carrying on the tradition of Bullitt's past, the 2019 model ditches the tradition pony logo in the front grille. In its place is a menacing black honeycomb grille which hints at the fury of the 5.0 liter. The hood features scalloped vents reminiscent of the 1968 model. In the rear, you'll find a gas cap-inspired Bullitt logo on the decklid. You'll find a matching Bullitt logo on the steering wheel. Otherwise, the Bullitt is a model of subtlety, true to the McQueen character.

Not Coming Soon Enough

Ford says the Bullitt will be available in the summer of 2018, just in time to dress as Frank Bullitt and be the king of every Halloween party in the neighborhood. Those lucky enough to purchase the Bullitt are guaranteed to up their cool factor and street credibility. By owning a Bullitt, you let everyone know you're not scared of a fire-breathing V8 and you can handle a manual transmission. Even more, the restrained styling gives the impression of effortless swagger. Having 480 horsepower definitely doesn't hurt. Especially if there's a black Dodge Charger in your rearview mirror.
