Ultimate Fox Body

Ask any Mustang fan what the ultimate version of the Fox Body generation is, and you'll get the same answer - the 1993 Cobra R. Ford saved the best for last, building just 107 of these race-inspired rides for public consumption. And one of the finest examples left on the planet just changed hands via Bring a Trailer for $85,000.

Nearly New

Number 59 of 107 produced, this particular car has traveled only 2k miles since new. So as you might imagine, it's in as-new condition with virtually zero imperfections.

Collector's Item

The seller recently acquired this Cobra R from someone who owned it for 15 years. But we can't imagine owning a car like this for that long without driving it at least once in a while.

Built for the Track

After all, the Cobra R was built for a purpose, and that purpose was to dominate on the track. That started under the hood with an SVT-tuned 5.0-liter V8 backed up by a T5 5-speed transmission and a limited-slip differential.

Competition Equipped

The real meat of these cars came from the suspension, however. Ford fitted the Cobra R with its "Competition Package," adding special 17" aluminum wheels and 13" front disc brakes, for starters.

Parts List

In addition, the Cobra R featured heavy-duty shocks/struts, beefy springs, bigger stabilizer bars, a strut tower brace, aux oil cooler, aluminum radiator, and power steering cooler.

Red Only

The '93 Cobra R was available in any color you like, so long as it was Vibrant Red with black wheels. It also didn't come with anything you didn't need in an effort to save weight.

Add Lightness

That meant no radio, radio antenna, air conditioning, power windows/mirrors, sound deadening, rear seat, or undercoating. But who needs any of that stuff in a race car, anyway?

Minor Gains

The Cobra R's 5.0 featured a slew of upgrades, yet only produced 10 more hp than a regular V8-powered '93. But in reality, Ford likely knew that racers who bought these cars would just mod it to their specific needs anyway.

Sound Investment

Regardless, most people recognized the instant collectible that the 1993 Cobra R was, and kept them sealed up like this one. And the fact that this particular car sold for nearly $60k more than its sticker price makes that look like a pretty smart decision today.
