Anger over loud exhaust ends in threatening note and anonymous vandal ruining S550 Mustang GT’s mufflers and exhaust tips.

As cool as the Ford Mustang GT looks and sounds, the truth is it’s not for everyone. Some people just aren’t into V8-powered American cars. Others prefer the Camaro. Then there are those who don’t like how loud they can be. It seems one person became so irate with a particular Mustang GT’s exhaust that they turned into a vandal.

According to his Facebook pictures, it looks as if a man by the name of Aaron Robinson got a post-facelift S550 Mustang GT in September of last year.

The photo he posted shows a handsome dark gray fastback with blacked-out badges and wheels. Like many Mustang owners, he eventually swapped out the wheels and tires for a different set that fit his unique style. But it’s not his cosmetic mods that led to a vandal taking matters into their own hands. It was his exhaust.

Earlier this month, Robinson shared a photo of a hand-written note he received from someone who found the volume of his Coyote’s howl unbearable. It reads:

“I finally found you! You want our attention. You don’t want our attention. You have 14 days to fix the mufflers. Or put the stock back on. Don’t egg us on you will only regret it! We encourage you to call the police, install video, nothing will work. Middletown police is 513-424-7700. Fix your muffler!”

The same day, Robinson put up another picture, this one of his car’s passenger-side exhaust tips filled with a foam that expands and hardens to fill gaps and cracks in construction and renovation projects. It seems as though the mysterious person made good on their promise of Robinson regretting the amount of sound his car cranks out. According to Robinson, the vandal’s rage-fueled exhaust mod “ruined my mufflers and tips.” He responded by filing a police report about the damage.

There were a multitude of ways this situation could’ve been remedied. As awkward as it sounds, a face-to-face conversation could’ve possibly resolved it. The person who inflicted this damage to Robinson’s car escalated things to criminal behavior. Perhaps even worse for them, they gave Robinson’s friends plenty of motivation to stage their cars in front of his/her house and perform a deafening concert with their four-wheeled instruments. Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum, H-D Forums, The Mustang Source, Mustang Forums, LS1Tech, HondaTech, Jaguar Forums, YotaTech, and Ford Truck Enthusiasts. Derek also started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
