Classic Shelby GT500 Mustang in carbon fiber with 810 horsepower can be yours today.

On February 2, 2021, Classic Recreations introduced their 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustang at the Motorsport Ranch in Texas. Back in 1962, Carroll Shelby began building the first Shelby Cobra CSX2000, so nearly 60 years later, Shelby’s most famous factory Mustang package has been recreated in grand fashion. This Mustang doesn’t just have the flawlessly recreated body in lightweight, exposed weave carbon fiber, but it has a long list of other features that transform this pony car into a supercar.

Best of all, if you have deep enough pockets, you can buy one a 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustang of your very own, but it doesn’t come cheap. The basic package with the carbon fiber body and a variety of drivetrain options starts at $265,000 while the limited-release Carbon Edition Shelby GT500CR package begins at $298,000. However, for those who have the money, this modified Mustang is a rolling piece of automotive artwork.

“Shortly after my grandfather beat Enzo on the track at Le Mans, Carroll and Ford engineered the all-new 1967 Shelby GT500 as a ‘Ferrari killer’ for the street,” said Aaron Shelby, member of the board of Carroll Shelby International and co-President of the Carroll Shelby Foundation. “Fifty-five years later, this car has new life with the capabilities to take on Europe’s biggest names once again. I’m proud of Classic Recreations’ efforts to keep Carroll’s dream alive.”

Carbon Fiber Shelby Mustang

The main attraction with this gorgeous 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustang is the full carbon fiber body. Developed in cooperation with the folks at Speedkore, this pony car has been identically recreated in exposed weave carbon fiber. Just the body swap cut about 600 pounds from this classic Mustang. At the same time, while much lighter than the stock body parts, this Shelby is dimensionally identical to the original, making Classic Recreations the only manufacturer to offer exact-match carbon fiber Shelby Mustang bodies.

“Our Carbon Fiber Shelby moved from concept to completion in an unbelievable nine months, all during a global pandemic,” said Jason Engel, founder and co-owner at Classic Recreations. “This first car in the production series demonstrates our ability to engineer and handcraft amazing cars by collaborating with key partners like SpeedKore. The muscle car is a breathtaking 600 pounds lighter than stock and has a power-to-weight ratio on par with most exotic vehicles.”

This carbon fiber body package is available on the officially licensed Shelby GT500CR 900C, 900S and 545 models. There is also the Carbon Edition package, developed with the folks at Shelby. This package includes unique badging, a Shelby serial number and a special delivery process at the Shelby American facility in Las Vegas. Each Carbon Edition Shelby GT500CR Mustang sold will also lead Classic Recreations to make a donation to the Carroll Shelby Foundation.

Premium Performance

The 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustang shown here is powered by the 5.2-liter Ford Racing Aluminator engine, topped by a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger. This power plant delivers 810 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, channeling it all towards the rear wheels by means of a Ford 10R80 10-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

To help put that power to the road, this classic Mustang has three-piece Forgeline wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich tires, with the rear rubber measuring 335/30/18. Keeping all of that meat planted on the road is  an adjustable Detroit Speed suspension setup with JRI Coilover shocks and Quadralink rear suspension. Wilwood brakes help get the lightweight pony car down from high speeds.

High Performance Cockpit

Inside, this 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustang features leather-wrapped ProCar bucket seats under an alcantara headliner. There is also a Kicker audio system, a Kenwood media center with navigation and red-painted custom gauges with a 200 mile-per-hour speedometer.

Frankly, with a price of nearly $300,000, we don’t imagine that Classic Recreations will sell a ton of these, but for those people who do buy one of these 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustangs, they will definitely turn heads everywhere they go.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
