Remembering the Ford Mustang Super Stallion

Retro video lets us reminisce about the Mustang that inspired the Terminator Cobra.

Mod Motor Mustangs posted a this vintage video about the Mustang Super Stallion. The video is from the old ‘Motor Trend Television’ and showcases the 1997 creation of John Coletti. If you’re not familiar with the name, you owe it to yourself to look into him. John Coletti is responsible for many of the best Ford’s through the 1990’s and into the early 2000’s. You know, the ones you put up on your bedroom wall. His career is highlighted by recognizable models, like the 1999 F150 Lightning, 2000 Cobra R with the 4-valve 5.4L modular, and the 2003 SVT Cobra Terminator among many others.

Back to the one-off main event: the Mustang Super Stallion was fitted with the 5.4L modular V-8, a four-valve head and a big ol’ Garrett supercharger. All that is good for a jaw-dropping (remember, this was 1997) 595 hp. Remember, this is when the 4.6L in the Mustang GT made just 215 hp. Many of the changes made to the Super Stallion might seem natural from our perspective, but remember: this was groundbreaking at the time. Independent rear suspension? Check…though a little fancier than the one introduced in 2015. E-85? Check! The Super Stallion wasn’t just a Viper/Corvette challenger, it was a study in alternative fuel power production.

The headline power figures are made on 10 psi of boost, while running on the 85% ethanol blend known as E-85. On 93 octane pump gas, and 8 psi, the Super Stallion put down 545 hp. Nothing to laugh at, especially when the revered Terminator made 390 hp. What kind of performance did one of Coletti’s finest creations have? 0-60 mph came in 3.8 seconds and the quarter mile in 12.1 seconds at 117 mph. Pretty impressive numbers by any measure.
