Mustangs in the Movies: Tokyo Drifting in a ’67 Fastback

1967 Ford Mustang Fastback - The Fast and the Furious -Tokyo Drift

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift doesn’t have Gal Gadot, Jordana Brewster or Michelle Rodriguez, but it does have some of the sweetest eye-candy ever to be featured in the high-octane six-film franchise (soon to be seven). Yes, we’re talking about the classic ’67 Fastback.

Sure, the purist in us doesn’t want to see the ’67, the first redesign of the mythic model, running on anything but American muscle, but there’s something darn appropriate about taking two wrecked rides and turning them into one mean machine. Also, you’ve got to admit that Nissan RB26DETT looks like it’s been well-cared-for.

As you might expect, the ‘Stang initially rejects her foreign invader. As you can see in the video below, she’s more than a little bit squirrely, but that sure adds to the drifting fun, and when Lucas Black (who also plays the quarterback in Friday Night Lights) finally gets his pony somewhat tamed, that’s when the real fun starts.

The film crescendos into one of the few car-movie finales ever to be decided by a mountain-descending drift race, where the true star of this film shines her brightest.
