Mustang to Add Pedestrian Detection System?

Let’s weigh the pros and cons of this high-tech safety system as a potential Mustang feature.

Do you ever get the sense that the Mustang is slowly sliding out of the tough skin that’s made it so iconic? That it may just be sliding into a more casual suit, fitting for any-old everyday run to the supermarket?

Now, don’t get us wrong, we certainly understand the need to make the pony car more practical. But some of the “progress” does raise the question of whether or not we’re headed down a very tame road.

Interesting, right? Because as much as we appreciate the idea of the Mustang adding a pedestrian detection system to its list of features, there is a bit of irony. Like the fact that the car is aiming for the same cred shared by vehicles like the Toyota Prius.

The system, which could reportedly be available this fall, features a bumper-mounted radar and a windshield-mounted camera that are used to alert the driver of things ahead. It has generally been met with great fanfare by most reports. And we, of course, recognize the safety benefits of adding more advanced safety equipment to the car.

However, with the elimination of more traditional Mustang features like the V6 engine, it does make you wonder if Ford is slowly but surely reestablishing a new identify for the Mustang. What’s next, a driverless Mustang?

Then again, many would probably argue that with all the poor driving incidents we’ve covered involving Mustangs, the more safety features, the better.

What do you think?
