What's New with the 2018 Mustang (Photos)
The new, 2018 Mustang has officially been revealed and here are the latest things we've found out about the newest version of Ford's pony car.
1. The V6 is Dead
Even though Ford sold an incredible number of V6 Mustangs over the years, the 2018 Mustang won't be offered with one in the base model. Instead, it will carry on with just two engine options - the 2.3 liter Ecoboost four cylinder and the 5.0 liter V8. Following the introduction of the 310 hp four cylinder Mustang, the less powerful 300 hp six cylinder just became obsolete and redundant.
2. More Power
No matter which engine option you opt for, you'll get more power than the previous generation. The 2.3 liter EcoBoost four cylinder is expected to make closer to what it does in the Focus RS now, which is 350hp and 350lb-ft of torque. The 5.0 now comes fitted with dual-injection (both port and direct) similar to that in the all new Raptor, and is supposed to be new from the crankshaft up. No one has released power number yet, but expect a substantial bump, plus the same or better efficiency from increased compression and decreased friction.
3. MagneRide for the Masses
For 2018, the Mustang will be available with MagneRide magnetorheological adaptive dampers in both Ecoboost and GT Performance Pack equipped cars. Previously, magnetically-controlled active dampers were only available on the Shelby GT350. The option brings top notch, world class, adjustable suspension technology to Ford's new pony car. Plus, the Performance Pack will be available on automatic transmission equipped and convertible Mustangs instead of just hardtop and manual models.
4. Upgraded GT Performance Pack
Checking the GT Performance Pack option in 2018 will bring a host of new and exciting features. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires replace the old Pirelli P Zero's. A big new wing sits on the decklid and provides significant downforce (it can be deleted by special order). Also, all GT's offer a new optional active exhaust system that allows drivers to increase or decrease that glorious V8 noise, a la the Shelby GT350.
5. New 10 Speed Automatic
The big news in the transmission department for the 2018 Mustang is the availability of the new 10-speed automatic. The quick shifting auto box can handle more torque than the outgoing 6-speed, and it's already received good reviews from its use in the new Raptor. Ford didn't ignore the six speed manual either, giving it a new dual mass flywheel and twin disc clutch for improved feel and strength.
6. Digital Instrument Cluster
The 2018 Mustang ditches its old analog gauge cluster in favor of a 12 inch wide digital cluster. The new and improved display has a ton of configurable modes and various display patterns, including a simulated analog display. Aside from changing colors, there are cool built in toys like a drag strip style "Christmas Tree" that allows you to hone your reaction time.
7. Exterior Styling is New, Sort Of
More of an evolution than a revolution, the styling of the 2018 Mustang is sleeker and leaner than before. The hood is 20mm lower in the front for improved aerodynamics, and both the upper and lower grille are all new. There's a new rear diffuser out back, and all of the front lighting is now LED for better visibility.
