7 Top Mods for Fox Body Mustangs
There are many great mods available for the Fox Body Mustang. We'll show you a few of the best ones.
1. Overall Engine Tune-Up
One of the first things you should consider is a complete engine tune-up. A full tune-up would include setting the timing, installing a new air filter, new oil and fuel filters, new ignition coils/distributor, spark plugs, and spark plug wiring. This will set you up to get the most of out of the rest of the modifications that you make.
2. Brakes
The stock drum brakes on back of the Fox Body Mustangs were relatively inadequate for a proper sports car. You may want to consider installing a disc brake setup for the rear wheels. Either way, high performance pads all around are gonna make a noticeable difference even if you stick to the stock drums. The last thing to look into is upgrading your brake lines to stainless steel. The stock rubber lines can expand during braking and reduce overall braking force.
3. Headers
The stock headers don't allow for much airflow. Any aftermarket short tube headers will be a significant step-up from the stock headers. These are relatively easy to install. If you are up for more of a challenge and would like more low end torque then consider putting on long tube headers. Long tube headers are more difficult to install however!
4. Throttle Body
The stock throttle body is a bit small on the Fox Body Mustang. Upgrading to a 65-75 mm throttle body will help you gain a couple horsepower. Most importantly, it will set you up for success with other air flow modifications. Air flow is very important in an engine, many of these mods work together and require multiple components to be upgraded in order to get noticeable results. Your new throttle body will work hand in hand with your new headers creating much better airflow in your engine.
5. Intake Manifold
You can either port your stock intake lower or you can go with a new aftermarket unit. One aftermarket option is the GT40/Explorer intake. This a lost cost unit and will help to boost performance. Porting your intake or upgrading it should yield a 15-20 horsepower bump.
6. Camshaft
This mod will be most effective if you have also upgraded the heads and the intake. Camshafts are very specific and need to match your vehicle so double check before purchasing. The company you purchase your cam from should have tools on their website to help you get the perfect match. If in doubt, call the company you're purchasing from. Better safe than sorry!
7. Short Throw Shifter
The last change you may want to make on your Mustang is swapping out the stock shifter for a short throw shifter. This won't do anything to improve the performance of your engine; it will merely give you a more comfortable and efficient way to shift gears. If you like to take your car out on the track, this will help you achieve better track times. This is a simple modification that will make a small improvement to your vehicle.
