6 Pics of the 727 Horsepower Roush P-51 Mustang

Roush Performance is back again with high-performance Mustangs that pay homage to the highly successful WW II warbirds.

1. The planes behind the car

Based on the latest GT Mustang chassis, Roush is offering up vehicles that are inspired by legendary WW II fighter planes. These planes were produced in America at the request of Britain's Royal Air Force to combat the forces that the Axis employed. The P-51 Mustang was a nimble single-seat plane with long-range capabilities that was used during not just WW II but also the Korean War and other conflicts.

P-51s can go for over as $1 million even if the plane is only partially restored. Currently, there are about 204 privately owned P-51 planes in the United States on the FAA registry with a good majority of them still flying. Some of these can be seen with groups like the Commemorative Air Force. Among those who own a P-51 Mustang is none other than Jack Roush.

2. Earthbound aviation

In a move to combine his two loves, Jack Roush modified and released upon the roadways world the P51 Mustang back in 2008 / 2009 model years. True to their name, 51 GT cars received the upgrade treatment and were able to push out 510 horsepower from a 5.0-liter V8.

However, that was almost a decade ago and now Roush has returned with something new and far more formidable for muscle car fans and Mustang aficianado.

3. A pilot's view

The 2017 P-51 carries on with the classic fighter plane motif with steel blue silver paint that calls to mind polished aluminum skin of the planes with a matte black anti-reflective hood that nods to the plane's glass canopy. Around back there is a carbon fiber rear spoiler and matching carbon fiber splitter to keep things planted when you are flying down blacktop runways. But what greets you when you first see the car is a menacing front bumper that rocks an aggressive carbon fiber front spoiler. Finally, there are a set of new 19-inch Weld Racing wheels wrapped up in Continental ExtremeContact Sport Tires to get all that power down to the surface.

4. A sumptuous but focused interior

Once you settle into the Amaretto Tuscany leather seats, you'll notice that Roush really took their time with these and didn't just slap a few trinkets with a numbered badge. There are Billet Performance pedals, special floor mats, illuminated door sills, and that lovely throwback red shifter knob that urges you to start driving immediately. Things like the P-51 designed instrument gauge cluster overlay and even a history book on the 357th Fighter Group show just how much Roush cares about this car and what it means to the buyers.

5. What's cooking, good looking?

Now for the part that I'm sure you've been curious out: What's under the hood? Roush stepped things up from the latest iteration of the P-51 with a car that puts out over 200 plus horsepower over the previous iterations. The 5.0-liter Coyote engine has been hooked up to a Phase 2 ROUSH Eaton TVS supercharger that gives the output of the car 727 horsepower of rubber smoking retro plane goodness. The P-51 can be had with either a six-speed transmission or a six-speed automatic. A low-temperature radiator was brought in to keep the efficiency of the engine at top notch.

6. Last but not least…

The car also has installed a Roush Active Exhaust System that can be enabled via smartphone controls to open or close the valves so you can regulate decibel levels. This will surely help to bridge relations with your neighbors who otherwise would be very upset at your comings and goings in the monstrous car.

Like I mentioned before with the last P-51, only 51 cars will be built and will come at a retail price of a base Mustang GT PLUS $42,000. The cars will be available through Roush-affiliated Ford dealerships and will come with a 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty.
