Amazing Score

Just when you think that all the rare, desirable Mustangs in the world have been discovered, another incredible barn find emerges. But few Mustangs plucked from storage in recent years compare to this amazing find recently documented over at Hot Rod.

Penultimate Mustang

Only 1,358 Boss 429s were built in total, making this a rare ride indeed. But most also consider this NASCAR-inspired ride to be the penultimate Mustang, which only adds to its mystique.

Exciting Find

So you can imagine the excitement Charlie Lyons, a muscle car dealer, and restoration shop owner in Irvington, Alabama felt when he came across this one sitting in a Mobile garage.

Welcome Phone Call

Even better, Lyons didn't exactly have to look very hard to find the rare ride. “Everybody around here knows I collect cars and dig them out of barns,” Lyons told Hot Rod. "Apparently, the gentleman who owned the car told somebody at the local dentist office that he had it. That person called me. I get those calls fairly frequently, but they rarely turn out to be anything.”

One of 13

This time around, that phone call turned up one of the best barn finds we've ever come across. After all, this is one of just 499 assembled at Ford’s Rouge plant and shipped to Kar Kraft for final assembly. Of those, just 13 had Calypso Coral paint with a white interior.

Hemi Power

So you can bet that Lyon's interest was perked when he received that mysterious phone call. “My wife and I were taking her car to get a tire repaired, and the phone rang with a gentleman who wanted to know if I was interested in buying this Mustang," he recalled. "I said ‘what kind of Mustang is it?’ and he said, ‘Well, it’s one of those with the Hemi motor in it.’”

Light Mods

Turns out, the guy who owned this rare Mustang had purchased it from the original owner back in 1976. He then modified it a little, adding a pearl clearcoat, gauges, wheels and tires, traction bars, and nitrous.

Long Rest

The Boss had not emerged from its storage space since 1989 and was covered up and behind a bunch of debris. Interestingly enough, its last outside appearance was for a photo shoot for Super Ford magazine's November of '89 issue.

True Survivor

Outside of the previously listed mods, the Boss appeared to be in amazing condition. “There is not a rust hole or rust spot anywhere on the car,” Lyons said. “We could wax it, clean it up, get it running, and take it to a car show the way it is as a survivor.”
