My Idea: Taurus Coupe
My Idea: Taurus Coupe
Now, we all know about the raging IRS v. SRA debate going on, and we all love options, so why shouldn't Ford release a Taurus Coupe with the IRS?
Here is a 'chop I did to show what it could look like, and I love it!
- Base if off the Mustang and add the IRS I am sure they already have developed.
- Turn an I4 sideways and add it to the current 3.5 from the Mustang and the EcoBoost from the upcoming F-150 for 3 engine options.
- Focus it a bit more towards luxury, refinement and MPG (4 cyl) to better attract the 335i/A5 driver
- Focus the Mustang on more performance/V8 engines

FWIW the Taurus is kind of a pig of a car. The car itself would be heavy ala the Challenger and Camaro being based off larger platforms. Its also big on the outside and smaller than it should be on the inside.
Sedans and coupes don't have to be built off the same platform. Like the Mercedes E Class for example (coupe is built off modified C class chassis IIRC).
I have one Sir, and I beg to differ with your assumption. The car rides and performs and is appointed very nicely.
I've got a 2010 SHO and I love it for what it is. But nobody is going to take that car hard into a corner and live to tell about it.
It's a good chop, and if you want your 2014 Mustang to look like a 2010 Taurus then this is the look for you.

More Photoshop goodness for the side/rear.
The more I play with this car, the more I like it
Though this might make for a good Lincoln Mark VIII (or MXIX), even though I don't like their front end designs very much.

Personally, I don't think this looks "Mustang-ish" enough to be the next Mustang, even though I do like the look.
The problem is can they sell 50,000 of these and at the same time bolster Mustang's numbers. If you think about it at one time Ford managed to sell Mustangs, Cougars, Thunderbirds, and Probes during the 80's and 90's. Now what do they have? Maybe they feel there is no need in this day and age.
I really do like the chop, I just got confused a bit in the beginning when you said it was a chance to get an IRS, but it was a Taurus coupe and base it on a Mustang. That's why I brought the weight issue into it.
Now with all that said. If they had this car, then if they downsized the Mustang to sn-95 size that would be a sweet plan. Offer them both, but for two different reasons. I think we all want lighter Mustangs, and this way they could have something in the larger coupe category and then they could build a Lincoln off this platform.
