'05 Mustang & Mazda RX8... looking similar. Has anyone else noticed some Mazda RX8 bodylines in the new Mustang design.

I saw some pics of the '05 Mustang from the side looking back at an angle, then had to take a 2nd and 3rd look to know for sure that I was looking at a Mustang and not a Mazda RX8.

There's only one shape that these two vehicles share in common, and here it is:

The rear arches are similar, other than that, I can't see it. Also, if you saw these two next to each other in the parking lot, the Mustang looks much bigger. Also, RX-8 is a 4 door.....just

One is a smooth, clean looking machine. The other is a busy hodge-podge that looks fugly.

I'm not saying they are identical in any way, just share a few similar body lines. If all you could see were an outline or shadow of the car, you would see the rear arches are very similar.

The crease in the body that is about 6 inches below the windows running the length of the car is similar. If you take the side body scoop and take it off the front fender, mirror it, then place it on the rear fender, the the door area between the wheels are similar. The door handles are "identical". The winshield angle to roof line is similar.

Yes, I know size wise, the Mustang is easily a larger car overall. Iwould assume that the Mustang was NOT designed to look like the RX8, just the opposite, as I'm thinking the Mazda designers went for a Japanese take/impression of the Mustang, except for the front fenders and hood. The 3-door idea, well who knows why they decided to use that...

If I unfocus my eyes and stand about 20 feet away from my monitor, they sort of look similar.

Other than that, I'd have to say I don't see it.

Dude-

If you were thinking of quitting your day job, and going into Automotive Design, all I can say is...

Don't quit your day job!

The fact that they both have wheel arches that are visually joined by some lower body accent is the strongest link you can find?

There is no crease 6" below the window on the Mazda. That's called a reflection. Besides, that type of crease (the subtle one on the Mustang) is pretty common. And THAT is the strongest link you have.

Doors are different
Fenders are different
Tails are different
Rear glass lines are different
Size and scale are different

The Ford screams "Mustang" to old and young alike.

That quartering angle shot of the Mazda you provides screams "What were they thinking?" to old and young alike. It looks great from the side, and from the front. But from the side rear, it's the ugliest thing on the road IMHO. I've seen many of them, and I always say "What were they thinking?"

I don't see it either...maybe the bumps on the rear wheel well...but the profile is night and day.
