Should the Mustang tackle "The Ring"?
Should the Mustang tackle "The Ring"?
Quarter mile is for pu$$ies so let's test the car's metal!
I'm kidding about the quarter mile but I just wanted to generate some interest if there is any, if not I'm not going to get in a tissy.
I realize that the Nurburgring is becoming a sports car standard in testing as much as 0-60 and 1/4 mile. At this point it is almost the black cloud that hangs over the new GT's head, possibly more the elephant in the room so to speak. With all the buzz about the GT vs. M3, I'm sure many have spoke of the Mustang now ready to battle the ring. Hell, I'd like to see all model of Mustang test the ring, V6, GT, GT/Brembo, GT500, GT500 SVT.
Just an interest, if no one else is interested, just let this float on into the seventh level of forum's inferno.
Hey, Austin may be getting F1!

I would love to see the GT500 on the Ring.. Hell they did in in a Ford Transit! It's an awesome track that I hope to oneday be able to drive myself.
Bummer F1 isn't coming to Monticello as That's 90 minutes from me... But I may well be making a visit to Austin in 2012!

I think they definitely need to do it with a pro driver. A new E92 M3 on production tires ran a 8:05, someone took a 2007 GT500 to the ring and it ran a 8:27 I believe. An M3 on PSC's ran a 7:50, while a 2005 997S ran a 7.59.

You know, I get tired of every manufacturer saying their latest model has clipped another few seconds of the 'Ring time. I just don't care. Sure, it's sets a benchmark but I couldn't care less if the Mustang takes a whole day to complete a lap.......it'll be more fun than most of those clinical European cars
Depends on whether the Stang is satisfied with being a big fish in a small pond (American quarter miler) or a true world class performance car, in which case a run on the Ring is the ante in these days.
I hope they do it.
I hope they do it.
I think that the Mustang has set its self up this time with the level of performance it has been graced with seems to be that it being competitive with Euro spec cars was a convenient byproduct. This is the only reason I ask. I assumed some would be for, some would be against. It's all in good fun, I am not looking for a car that beats a GT-R or anything. Like it was said, the Mustang will still be a lot more fun to drive. I really don't think it would be any skin off of Ford's back if they did it, just more of a "hey we can do that too" kind of thing. As a car enthusiast cars like the GT-R and the likes are always paper winners, but still, the fun factor still goes to cars like the Mustang and 370Z.
Cars like the GT-R, ZR1, 599, 911 all have something to live up to, the Mustang just has nothing to loose really. I like that. The underdog attitude. It keeps you on your toes a little more.

The problem with running it on the 'Ring' is this:
There are NO STANDARDS and no sanctioning body to verify the claims.
Manufacturers say this car ran xx:xx around the ring or that car ran xx:xx, but at the end of the day we don't know whats been done to these cars. Sometimes they put R compound tires on there, they change the gearing, add pro drivers, etc. Anyone who remembers the war between the Porshe and Nissan (911 and GT-R) knows what I'm talking about.
Until there is an unbiased organization to validate the times and standardize the "rules" for the ring, all it is is one giant pissing match with data that cannot be validated or compared
It'd be cool to see yes, but could we rely on the numbers?....not so much
