Skipping Gears

Just hit 5000 mi on my 2015 GT PP 6-speed manual. Have begun skipping gears because the 3.73 diff makes 1st gear so low it's rarely needed. On level starts I easily go 2-4-5. Slight uphill? 1-3-5. 6th is for the interstate. Note: This is easy non-performance driving. Of course, all 6 gears get used when driving for fun. I have some dull suburban errands that don't deserve wearing out everything if possible. Less shifting in traffic, all good! Anyone else?

I haven't received my 2015 yet, but will soon enough. My 69 has a 5 speed with 4:10s with 26 in tall tires... I don't even skip gears in that... but the cam doesn't like anything below 1800 or its starts jerking... lots of shifting for sure, but the motor is too wild for skipped shifts. Can't wait to get my new 2015...

Skipping gears is very normal in these cars, especially with 3.73 and numerically higher gears.

Does this not cause excess synchro wear?

Maybe if you're trying to mash it into gear every time.

I've skipped from 3rd to 5th or 3rd to 6th on a spirited highway merge but not from 1st to 3rd/4th. I tried starting from a stop in 2nd but it doesn't work too well in mine. I have rolled a wee bit and started from 2nd and that works fine. I don't think it hurts anything to skip gears as long as you do it w/o shifting too fast or miss a gear. Probably helps your mpg too

I do this around town all of the time. When having fun I use all of them.

I HATE the gearing in my 2015 PP car. Way too short. I think my 2012 with 3.31's too short too.

At about 4000 miles I grew also grew tired of starting in 1st and usually opt for 2nd unless I'm in dense traffic and need to modulate my speed a little better when creeping along. I can do like 8mph 700rpm in 2nd gear without lugging so whatever lol. 1st gear still gets used for launches and stuff. I dont actually skip gears once cruising though, I kinda like shifting through them all and getting to hear+feel the engine purr.

That must be a real turn off for you.... especially in a brand new car. I can't imagine how turned off I would feel if I didn't want to drive my new car.

I installed a Barton short throw shifter which is 40% shorter than the stock shifter in the 2014 Mustang and have 3.31 gears. I love it.

Let my gym buddy drive my car and he just couldn't drive it. he's too used to his FRS. The throws in his FRS feel like the throws are 3 times longer and feels really sloppy to mine.

I'm not talking about the shifter.

To me, they go hand in hand...

He means his gearing is too short, so he would prefer taller (lower numerically) gears. Shifter length has nothing to do with it.

Sounds like you need to find a friend who has what you need and do a swap. I'm sure 99.9% of the non-PP GT owners would love 3:73s...

The 3:73s was a huge bonus for me... I'm used to 4:10s with a 5speed and shorter tires.

There is some goofyness with the new IRS pumpkins. Some gears will fit in some, some gears others. Mine has the Torsen (which I like a lot) and from what I hear there is a limited gear selection.

I'll probably go with a TR6060 or T56 with the 2.66 first gear. That would solve all the gearing problems, shifting problems and be able to handle more power.

I skip gears almost always in my 2013 GT with performance package (3.73 torsen differential). It all depends on the moment . . . how high I carry the current gear, and the wants of the next shift. Sure, the stock shifter in the Getrag trans isn't the best by far, but it's entirely workable with 6 gears to exploit. I've NEVER ground the gears, and missed a shift only rarely early on when it was factory tight and would it up a bit too high for an optimum shift point. Now that it's loosened up a bit it fits like a glove, and I can feel connected to the car very well.

My research thus far on the 2015 is there increased crispness in the shifter, and the gate is a bit better, but it's the same Getrag trans.

Agreed, with the MT82 3.73's are over the top. If I ever supercharge my car I'm going with the 3.31's myself.
