I used my iPhone held on the front of my rear view mirror with a rubber wrist band.

Your car looks absolutely amazing... I too have the same color... Great job!!!

Thanks. I have loved it since day one.

That was a great suggestion. I had tried different things, with iPhone holders mounted to the windscreen, or to the dash, etc, but it always gave me shaking footage. I tried your solution and it works like a charm! Thanks for sharing.

It's what I had at the time. I glad it worked out for you too.

So here in a couple of weeks I will go on a pretty epic road trip with my lovely wife. We have been planning this for almost a year. This year marks our 20th year of marriage. We have actually been together for 22 years. She was my high school sweetheart. We could have easily chosen to fly or take the train to our destinations but knowing me and what I love to do she suggested that we drive. More to follow....

CiniZter 6/4/14 11:24 AM

wow... post pics of the trip!!!

Stevedotmil 6/4/14 11:58 PM

If you have read through this thread you should know I love to take pictures of stuff. I'm sure it will take me at least a week to edit the amount of pictures that I will take on this trip.

It goes away after a little while.

Seems it wasn't on the wall securely enough. When I came down this morning it was sitting in a pile of glass. Have to get that fixed.

Thanks for the compliments. We are excited for our trip that starts TOMORROW!!!

Very nice fathers day gift. These crappy walls here in Germany I had the same thing happen to me.
Enjoy the trip and watch for the speed camera's!

So here's my update that I have been lazy with lately. So I took over 1000 pictures with my T5i Canon on our road trip. I'm still editing and going through all of them. When I'm done I will update with that portion of my car's epic journey through Europe.

Instead I will post the same info from my other thread about going to the Nurburgring on Sunday with some friends of mine. We have a Facebook page to plan Ring trips for all the guys that hang out here in Germany. There were about 10 of us that met up sunday morning. My son Devon was with me for this trip. Our morning started at 3:30 in the morning when we left the house with all of our stuff in the back seat. Camera bag, PB&J samiches, drinks, snacks, helmet, gloves, coffee. It is just under 4 hours from here on the road at speeds that averaged around 100 mph on the autobahn. We stopped for breakfast at around 6AM at a McDonald's. We were all ready to get out of the cars and get some grub. Little did we know that they didn't start serving breakfast until 7AM. Who would've known? They were serving regular (German) McD's food. So we got some coffee, danishes, and planned what we would do when we got there. We needed to fill up as I was just over a 1/4 tank left and didn't want to push it.

We left and made our way to the nearest gas station that we would use and filled up with 93 Super Plus which is less than 5% ethanol. About 20 minutes later we exited the autobahn and headed into the country filled with rolling hills and the anticipation of finally getting there was really getting to me. We started passing signs that read 7 KM to the Ring. I was pretty excited. We passed the bunch of campers that sit next to the ring and there were already people moving around getting ready for the opening horn to sound at 8AM.

We finally got there to the staging area for the Ring and there were only about 10 cars there and it was 20 minutes to opening. My friend Chuma and I were talking about how the morning was going to go. We cleaned all the bugs off the windows and headed over to the office where you buy your Ringpass. There are two windows to buy cards at. The one that Chuma usually uses wasn't open yet so he didn't think that we could get our cards yet. We walked over and got in line when we figured out we could. The other window opened up and we were buying our cards when the bell sounded that the track was open. Everyone that was there was rushing to get through the lift gates and out on the track. Tourist days are super busy and there are a ton of wrecks that shut the track down while they cart people's metal money boxes off and clean up the messes.

I bought 4 laps which cost me 100 Euro (around $135). You can buy more laps or less but 9 laps is 209 Euro and single laps are 27 each. By the time we got back to the car and we headed out onto the track there were only about 10 cars out there. I was using Harry's Lap Timer on my iPhone because that's what everyone uses to keep track and look at all the data. You can take video and overlay the data as well but that's for much later. I started the timer which is GPS tracked and starts and stops automatically. Tourist days the track is open from Bridge to Gantry so I had that track loaded and off we went.

I came out of the cones and hit the gas in 2nd. The first portion goes up hill and goes around past the GP course area. You don't realize just how steep this place is until you are in a car and trying to figure out what you got yourself into. I didn't plan on going fast at all, I just wanted to get the experience out of the way and not crash. Making our way around the track was hard to explain in words. I have literally driven around this track thousands of times on Gran Turismo on Playstation. I had each corner memorized and had a general idea of what gear to be in but as soon as I was out there all that went out the window and I just went with it. I'm thankful that there wasn't any traffic on that first lap and that I got passed by only one car, the black Lotus that was the first guy out. We made it back into the gate and parked the car. 11:13 was on the timer.

My son and I were leanin against the front of my car when my friend Chuma came in. He had hot lapped his car for 3 laps. When he passed us in the parking lot there was a rather large amount of clicking happening that sounded like he had snapped a tie rod or something. I figured out that it was his brakes cooling down when I got over the where he parked and they were still clicking. The smell of hot tires and even hotter brakes was pretty intoxicating. I was hooked.

We talked about his laps. He had gotten into it with a couple twin Mini Coopers that were track prepped. At one point his car got sideways with a Mini about a foot behind him in a corner he came too hot in on. So he asked me how my lap went, I told him, and then we went out in his car so I could see what his 8 minute lap time felt like in a stock M3.

We headed out and within the first 20 seconds when we shot up the hill and I was being held in my seat by the active side bolsters I knew it would be something else. The best way for me to describe the next 8 minutes is that I was on a roller coaster with 4 tires that had a leather seat and A/C. I was thinking the whole time that at any second the traction would break and we would go flying off the track into the wall. We didn't of course and he was pushing pretty hard. I was amazed at his level of skill and the technology that made all that possible in a stock car.

When we got back we went out in my car and Chuma coached me through the whole lap. He was getting frustrated that I wasn't comfortable with the speeds I was going given that I had all season Pilot Sports on my car. We made it through and I was glad he knows what he's talking about. I ran a 10:17. Just with someone coaching me I ran almost a whole minute faster. We had to slow way down for two wrecks that were on the track while we were out and I slowed down so that a couple WAY faster cars could pass me. I'm sure that if I were out there without those two factors I would be able to break into the 9 minute bracket. Next time maybe.

Nice writeup Steve! I've watched at the Ring many times, but never had the balls to actually go for it (nor the car for that matter, when I still lived in the Netherlands).

Stevedotmil 7/14/14 02:40 PM

I can't wait to go back. A bunch of my friends here are going back for a few days this coming weekend. I can't make it but I sure with I could. Look for them in the new videos of the tourist days. 18th - 20th.

Boss 1409 7/18/14 09:09 PM

Def miss the roads and the track! Nice to not have to keep the car in the garage all winter though.

Stevedotmil 7/19/14 01:32 AM

That's true. I'm thinking about getting a beater for this winter but I only work like 8 minutes from my house.

Are your stripes white or bright silver?

Stevedotmil 7/20/14 01:26 PM

They are metallic silver. 3M.
